The air surrounding us was stiff, no wind swept through the open field. Just dead, nothingness and next to no sound. Tonight was beyond eerie, nothing felt right; even my own body felt off, with random clicks and twists every few movements.
All day we had been physically preparing for the trials, so I brushed it aside, assuming it was all the strain I had put my body through within a short few hours. Calum reassured that was the case, so I dismissed it and kept training.
By the time we were dragged out of that small, stuffy room, I was nearing the edge of petrified. My adrenaline was through the roof, my body buzzing with nerves and determination. Calum had talked us both up, and he kept reiterating that in a few hours, we'd be out of here.
We were shoved onto the same open field we were taken to a week ago; only this time, there was a massive cage situated in the centre. It seemed like something from a twisted horror movie, one I definitely did not want to be apart of. Bright lights surrounded the outside, one flickering from the state of how unkept they appeared to be. It all seemed like a massive underground, illegal boxing set up.
Calum and I were separated almost instantly, his frame being ripped from mine and taken to the other side. He said something aimed at me, a few shouted words before he was being silenced by the strangers large hand. I couldn't pick up on what he said, mostly because all I could really hear was the sound of my own goddamn heartbeat in my ears. My whole body was tingling with something close to apprehension- it was a foreign feeling rather, one I definitely had not felt before.
I looked up at him and saw those saddened Brown eyes once more, before he was shoved out of my view. I wanted to fight and chase after him, but it was as though I was saving my energy for later. For fighting.
I was nudged to the floor, the other side of the cage, right in front the cage door. Looking at it had my stomach in knots, I had to try and keep my breath steady and my body strong. But my entire thought pattern ceased, the second I saw a man being shoved down beside me. He was massive, probably double my size, and had a scowl on him that could've immediately made me jump out of my skin. He looked roughly 40, with tattoos covering almost every surface of his body and even a few piercings here and there.
There was no doubt in my mind- if I was versing this man, there was no way I was getting out of here alive. He had the ability to crush me in seconds.
I looked away the second he turned his gaze to me, brown eyes glowing down at me. My breathing picked up rapidly, it felt like nothing could truly calm me down and I was starting to believe I didn't have a dying chance at this.
"Let's hope I'm in there with you, baby girl." I heard his deep voice scowl. I didn't even look up at him, I kept my head down and tried to ignore the way his words seemed to have beaten me down. I couldn't let his dark, twisted voice weaken me anymore than I was right now. I refused to let my fear get in the way of Calum and I's freedom together.
"Welcome," a loud voice shouted from afar, shattering my thoughts and leaving me temporarily terrified. "To your fate."
Felix emerged from the shadows, his devilish grin still plastered on his pale lips. A low laugh echoed around the space, leaving his pathetic mouth. "I've always wanted to say that."
I couldn't believe that now he was cracking some sort of humourless one liner. Right before (presumably) innocent people were going to die. This man had a very sick and twisted soul, I could only help but wonder what might've made him this way.
