VICTORIA: The next day the house was swarming with men I had never seen before and my parents.
"How is this possible?" My dad yelled with fury, I had only seen him angry once and this was the second time.
The guards couldn't answer and even at my age I knew that there was normally a rotation shift of guards.
What was the cause of their absence that night?
"What would you have done if my daughter was hurt. If not for Owen she could've been abducted or worse!" My mother hollered with an emotion mixed of fear and rage.
What was funny was that it was aimed at dad "You said that they'd be here. Why weren't they?"
"Someone must have had valuable information on this safe house and powerful magic to have been able to bypass the magical wards." A guard interfered but seeing the vicious eyes directed at him by mother he shut his mouth.
"Mum I'm okay" I tugged at her long skirt but she didn't even look at me.
Dad couldn't look her in the eye but she kept on "It could be the dark forces. He could've killed our daughter."
"Mum. I'm fine!"
"I know. I'm sorry." He muttered looking down.
"Sorry is not going to cut it Dwayne. Sorry just won't. She's our only child."
"What do you want from me?" Dad shouted back "I have no idea how this happened."
"Then how do you plan on making sure this never happens again?"
Dad sighed "We'd have to use Dragon Knights now. No taking risks with simple guards."
"Is that all? Even with them how sure are we?"
"Mum, I wasn't scared." I pulled at her skirt.
Why wouldn't she look at me?
"She isn't strong as you were. She's still just a child. This wasn't fair on her, if you had just convinced the council that I needed to be with Vicky." Mother went on.
"I know Joyce. I know." Dad replied in anguish as he reluctantly looked up at the sky "it's not easy to just do that."
"Are you trying to even say that they are more important than our daughter. Would you so easily forfeit her life for the sake of the kingdoms?" She shouted ignoring the people staring.
"No!" Dad suddenly bellowed and fire exploded in a circle around him making Mum immediately stop.
The other men backed away but mum barely flinched.
I could feel the heat even from where I stood and it was quite a distance away.
Mum took a deep sigh and whispered "I would've died if they had taken her Dwayne." Her voice was now shaky as her eyes filled with tears.
"I know Gloria." He pulled Mum slowly and hugged her.
"Mum" I tugged harder and she finally looked at me as she bent low "I'm..." I started but she cut me off as she hugged me.
"My sweet baby Victoria. I'm so sorry for what happened."
"I'm okay." I assured but she went on.
"You must've been afraid. I'm sorry honey."
"Mum I wasn't really."
"It's okay honey. Thank God we left Owen when we did." She hugged me again.
I looked to see Dad converse with the other guards, his face was clouded with anger and confusion.
That was the last time I ever saw the safe house, the last time I saw my parents together. Not that they divorced but they never went to a mission completely without one staying behind to keep watch over me.
It wasn't like one would watch me personally, it was more like they'd hire special help to protect me, most of the time it was Mum.
I had shown my true colors to the mystery figure that night, I had shown a terrified weak girl on the verge of fainting and never again was I going to be that way.
I was special after all.
