For one to hear, one must listen

Everly

I got home as quickly as I could. I didn't realize the time. God, I hope he's not home.

Just as I went to open the door, it began. My stepbrother stood there, giving me a look.

"Where have you been?" He asked.

"I was busy," I said as I walked past him.

He grabbed my arm, applying pressure. "I thought I told you to come straight home."

"You're not my father," I glared at him.

"No, and thank god for that. I just got the pleasure of being your stepbrother," he smirked.

"Get your hands off of me," I demanded.

"Nah, I don't think so. Since your mom left me in charge and you can't seem to listen when I tell you to do something, maybe you will listen," he said as he dragged me upstairs.

"Owen, let me go!"

He threw me into my room and removed his belt; Then he hit me over and over as I screamed.

"You stupid bitch! Maybe you will listen now," he barked as he continued. Once he finished, I cried.

"You think walking around like a hoe is proper. No wonder your dad left," he sneered.

"He died, you asshole!" I screamed.

He whacked me again with the belt.

"Yeah, well, mine did too, and I got stuck here," he screamed as he hit me again.

God, why was he still here? Mom felt sorry for him, but she didn't see the person he was. He had everyone fooled. When we were younger, Owen would be mean to me then lie about it. He was the definition of a psychopath.

I hated him.

"Now, when I tell you to do something, you do it," he told me as he walked out of my room. I lay on my floor and cried. My life sucked, and it stuck me here. When I turned eighteen, I was out of here. I didn't care.

Enzo

I got out of Cade's car and saw a car pull in fast. It came to an abrupt stop, almost hitting me. What the hell?

The door opened, and a guy stepped out. He looked at me. "Is there a reason you're too stupid to get out of the way?"

I had no clue what he was saying.

He rushed over to me. "Are you deaf?"

I looked at him, and all I saw was his lips move fast than before I knew it. He hauled off and hit me. That's all it took. I stood up and hauled off, punching him, knocking him off his feet.

"Damnnnn," Cade said.

"I give that landing a five. The guy didn't land on his feet," Julian smirked.

I didn't know who this asshole was, but I hate bullies. Thanks to Cole for teaching us to defend ourselves. I shook my head and turned, walking towards Cade and Julian. We walked into school.

I didn't know Everly was in the car.

Everly

I watched as Lorenzo hit Owen, causing him to get knocked out. I got out of the car quickly and ran into the school. At least I was safe.

I made my way to my locker and grabbed my books. Time to put on an act for everyone, even though I hurt. Sitting would be hard. As long as no one touched me, I was fine.

I was on my way to class when I bumped into someone.

"Sorry," I said to them.

"Everly?"

I looked up to see Cole. I looked at him wide-eyed.

"Everly, talk to me," he coaxed me.

"Hey, Mr. Hardwick," I faked a smile even though I wanted to cry right now.

"Everly," Mr. Hardwick said.

"I will be late for class," I said as I walked away. Cole was always trying to get me to talk to him, but I couldn't. I couldn't tell anyone what was going on in my life, not now, never.

Wade came out of his office and walked over to Cole, "Everly?"

"Yeah, I'm worried about Everly," Cole said, looking at him.

"Hun, you can't force them to talk," Wade advised him.

"I know, but something's not sitting right with me," he sighed.

"Your gut is never wrong," he said.

"That's what I'm afraid of," Cole said with a knowing look.

Enzo

I sat in class, and Everly walked in and took a seat. She didn't look happy. When she sat down, she cringed. I tapped her arm. She looked at me and smiled at me.

Something told me she forced that smile.

I wrote something down and handed it to her. She looked at me and took it. She opened it and said, "Yeah, everything is fine," she said while fake being happy. I'm deaf, not stupid.

Then I wrote something else. I handed it to Everly.

She read it, then pulled out her phone. A minute later, my phone vibrated. I checked it, and it was a text from Everly. I promptly programmed her number into my phone.

That would make communication easier until she learned sign language. Something told me, my uncles were up to something, and this wasn't about a school project.

Everly

Most of the day went by in a blur. I sent texts to Lorenzo throughout the day, and that made me feel better. A few of the girls on the squad made their comments about him, but I ignored them. They were ignorant.

I went to the locker room and changed in a stall. I didn't need anyone to see the marks. I came out to see Andi as she was tying her shoe.

"I didn't think anyone was still in here," I said as I went to my locker and placed my clothes inside.

"Only because you're too self-absorbed," she said to me.

"Excuse me," I looked at her furrowed brows.

She finished tying her shoe and stood up. "You heard me. You prefer snobs like Audrey and Tori, then real people."

"That's not true," I exclaimed.

"Oh, so, you treating Enzo like gum on the bottom, your shoe is what you call human decency," she asked me.

"I said nothing bad about Enzo," I said defensively.

"Nope, you didn't defend him when they did. Piece of advice. They aren't your friends," she said as she walked by me.

I stood there with furrow brows. I can't seem to win. Not at school and not at home. I wish I would have gone with Dad that night. Then maybe I wouldn't have to deal with any of this.

I went outside, and as the football players practiced, I walked over to the other girls. They picked me up as we did our routine, and they tossed me into the air. As I went up, I twisted and came back down. Audrey and Tori had to catch me, but they let me fall, and I hit the ground with a thud.

"Oops," Audrey said as people ran over to check me. I screamed as I held my arm. Oh god, I cried out in pain.

God, why do you hate me so much? Why?
