Enzo

I went to school and didn't see Everly for three days. I couldn't even text her because I didn't have my phone. I hope she's okay. I prayed she was okay.

I was getting my books out of my locker when I saw a girl walk up to us. She signed to me. "Hey, Enzo," Andi greeted me.

"Hey Andi," I signed back.

"Do you know sign language," Cade asked her.

"Sure do. My little brother is deaf," she smiled as I laughed, which came out like a squeak.

They looked at me as I shrugged.

"It was funny," I said to them. Cade rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Anyway, how come you're not like the rest of them?"

"Because they're stupid bitches who care more about themselves than anything. Like oh my god, there's a sale at Macy's," she spoke in a mocking tone. I couldn't help but laugh.

They looked at me as I grinned.

I liked Andi because she wasn't like most people. She had no-nonsense to her.

"I'll see you guys around," she said as she walked away. I waved to her as Cade furrowed her brows.

"Looks like Cade likes a girl," I signed.

"Her? Oh, hell, no," he exclaimed.

"Sure, keep telling yourself that," I responded before walking to class. Cade has always been the type to find some weird flaw with a girl and an excuse not to date them. I have no clue why, since it was the same with Julian. My friends were strange. I would love a date if a girl got past my deafness.

I took a seat, and a few minutes later, people walked in and took their position. I looked up and noticed Everly walked in. She was wearing sunglasses and had her cast on.

"Miss Ryan, we aren't outside. Take your sunglasses off, please," the teacher told her.

"I prefer not to," she whispered.

"You might not prefer to, but this is my class. Remove the sunglasses," the teacher said to Everly.

We watched as she sighed and then removed the sunglasses. My brows furrowed as everyone gasped. She sat there staring at her desk, hoping no one would see the black eye that adorned her face.

"Okay, let's begin," the teacher said, starting class.

I couldn't help but stare at her.

After class, she quickly placed her sunglasses back on then left. I got up soon as Julian followed suit. I caught up with her and stopped her.

She wouldn't look at me. "Everly, what happened?" I asked her as Julian spoke.

"I ran into a door," she whispered.

"That's a lie," I told her.

"It's the truth, Lorenzo," she snapped. "Now let me go. I will be late for class." She yanked her arm away, and I looked at Julian, who looked at me.

I know that the black eye wasn't from running into a door, and I know it had something to do with that guy that had picked her up from the hospital. It sucked. I needed to get my phone back.

At lunch I sat there, watching Everly. She acted like herself, but I know it was an act.

Everly

"Oh, my god, the freak is staring at you," Audrey scoffed as I looked at her.

"Better to be a freak than a bitch," Andi shot back.

"Well, you would know. Why are you even on the squad, anyway?" Tori asked with a look.

"Because I help win titles, you stupid hoe. Go spread your legs like mayonnaise more," Andi retorted.

I had to laugh at that one.

"Why are you laughing? That wasn't funny," Tori snapped.

"Because it was," I told her. She gasped, feigning hurt. "You know what, I'm tired of you calling Lorenzo names. Yeah, he's deaf, so what? At least he doesn't have to listen to the bullshit your spewing," I exclaimed as I got up and walked away.

Why agree with people that hurt me when someone who did nothing made sure I was okay? The truth was Lorenzo never caused problems, but people had no issue treating him differently. Sometimes I wish I was deaf; then, I wouldn't have to listen to judgmental people.

I walked to the garden the school had and sat down. It was the only place I felt okay. I didn't have to deal with Owen or other people. It was the one place I felt safe.

As I sat there looking at the pretty flowers, I saw someone place a flower in front of me. I looked up to see Lorenzo smiling at me. I took the flower from him, and he sat down next to me. I don't know what possessed me to do what I did next, but I laid my head on his shoulder.

Even though we didn't talk, just him being there was enough. There was something about Lorenzo that made me feel safe. He had this warmth to him. I haven't felt that in a long time.

We just sat there. No words spoke, but Enzo spoke volumes by his presence. Then I felt his hand touch mine, and I felt a spark. I didn't stop it. I wanted to feel something because I felt dead inside.

He slid his hand into mine and intertwined his fingers with mine. I looked at our hands and then looked at him as he looked at me and smiled genuinely at me. I couldn't help but smile back. I was feeling something for Lorenzo that I wasn't expecting, and I liked it.

The only problem was it didn't matter. I had Owen to deal with, unless. That gave me an idea. I may pay for it later, but at least I knew for a few hours I was safe.

I opened my notebook and wrote something. Then I held it up to Enzo.

Would you come over after school to work on our project?

He took the notebook and replied, I can't. My parents grounded me for stealing Cade's car. Although I didn't steal it, I borrowed it. Except I don't have my license yet.

"Oh," I fiddled with my fingers. Shit, there goes that idea.

Then he wrote something and handed it to me.

I'll see if Uncle Cole will talk to them. He's pretty good at convincing them.

I smiled as I threw my arms around his neck, taking him by surprise. I realized what I did and quickly pulled away.

"Sorry," I mumbled.

He grinned. I giggled. I think that meant he liked it. Now I wanted to learn sign language. I wanted to talk to Lorenzo.

Lunch ended, and we went to class. I could have some normalcy for a few hours.

Something told me, Lorenzo wouldn't let anything happen to me. For that, I was grateful.
