Enzo

For Valentine's Day, I wanted to do something special for Everly. I also wanted to tell her something special. The only problem was I couldn't drive, and I didn't want to bother anyone. I'm working on getting my license.

I walked to the bus stop and took the bus to get what I needed and go to her house. Since everyone was busy, I figured I could be resourceful.

I went to a flower shop and got some flowers for her then made my way to her house. When I got there, I knocked on the door and waited. I shivered from the cold, then hit again and noticed the lights were off. I furrowed my brows.

It seems no one is home, great. I wanted to surprise her, and she's not home. Another bus doesn't come for a while, and I went someplace close to warm up.

I found a coffee shop and walked in. I took a seat at the counter. A guy walked up and asked me what I wanted. I signed a coffee, and he looked at me weirdly.

"Look, kid, either order something or leave. I don't have time to play charades," he spoke. Luckily, I could read lips.

Great, not only did my surprise go bust, but some guy thinks I'm playing a game. I got up and leave when I saw him turn. Then I saw Elias walk towards him.

"He's deaf. He's not playing a game, Mick," Elias said.

"Oh," the guy said.

"Let me take care of him, and you go back to being the insensitive prick you truly are," Elias said as he signed to me.

The other guy walked away, and Elias got me a cup of coffee. I handed him some money, and he refused it.

"It's on the house. It's an apology for dealing with an asshole," he said as I took the coffee.

"Okay, roses and alone in a coffee shop on Valentine's Day. Do I want to know?" Elias asked me.

"Everly wasn't home. I wanted to surprise her, so I took a bus," I told him.

"Why didn't you ask someone to help you?" He asked me.

"I didn't want to bother anyone. Everyone all had plans, and I need not worry them driving me around because I don't have my license yet," I signed.

"Is it because of that, or is it because you don't want to put them out because you know they would do anything for you?" He asked me.

I looked at him.

"Enzo, they all care about you. They help you because they want to. You're the person who people like to help because you're a kind person," he reasoned.

"They already help me. I don't want to burden everyone," I sighed.

He looked at me, and I drank my coffee. He walked away, and I sat there. I looked at the flowers. All I wanted to do was something romantic for Everly, plus I had a surprise for her.

Ten minutes later, someone took a seat next to me, and Elias placed a cup of coffee in front of them. I sat there until Elias got my attention. I turned to see Everly sitting next to me and smiling.

"Are those for me?" She asked me as she pointed at the flowers.

I picked them up and handed them to her.

"I went to your house, but you weren't there," I signed.

"Because I was setting up your Valentine's Day gift. Let's finish our coffee, and I'll show you," she said to me. We drank our coffee.

After we left the coffee shop and went to her car, she drove us to my house. What in the world? We got out and went inside. Dad stood there and waved us to follow him. He led us to the kitchen, and there they decorated it with the table set.

There are two plates of food and drinks.

"I figure this would be better than a restaurant where people would screw up our orders and then not understand sign language," she said to me.

"I thought you were doing this for Mom," I signed to him.

"I have something else planned for your mom. You two enjoy," he patted my shoulder. We took a seat and ate. I had to admit this was better. There's nothing better than a home-cooked Italian meal.

I can't believe Everly did this for me. That made what I would do next even better.

"Everly," I said in my deaf voice.

"Yes," Everly asked.

"I love you," I said to her, and she smiled.

"Good, because I love you too," she signed. A smile curled upon my lips.

We finished our dinner and talked. We laughed and had fun. To me, this was the best Valentine's Day. It was simple. It's nothing major, just two people spending the evening together and having great food.

After dinner, I put on a movie, and we settled onto the couch. I know most people end up doing other things, but not tonight. I wasn't ready yet, and neither was she.

No, tonight, it was just two people paired on a class assignment to get to know each other, which we got an A. Thanks to Uncle Cole, I got to meet someone and eventually fall in love with them.

As we sat there watching a movie, it turned into two and come to the third one; we fell asleep on the couch. Mom and Dad came in and saw us. Dad walked over and picked up a blanket, placing it over us. Mom kissed me, and I cuddled into Everly as she snuggled into me.

Sometimes the best gifts come from the heart. Isn't that what Valentine's Day is spending it with the ones you love? For me, that was enough.
