Enzo

Today was the day I would take my test to learn how to drive. Dad planned because of my deafness.

Most people would think that when you're deaf, you can't drive, but that's not true. We may not hear like others, but they can equip our cars with a technology that alerts us for emergency vehicles. We also have to look for signals and pay attention.

We pulled up, and I got out of the car. We walked into the DMV. First, I had to take the written test, which lasted about forty-five minutes. They checked it and said I had passed.

I jumped up and down in excitement as people watched me. I didn't care. One part finished and now on to the other part, the driving aspect.

I got into the car with the instructor, who sat next to me. I looked at him, and he signed to me to start. I started the car and followed everything you're supposed to do. Then I pulled out. As I drove away from the instructor, Dad stood there watching.

A few minutes later, Wade, Cole, Adrian, and Luke arrived.

"Well," Cole asked him.

"He just pulled away. Is it bad that I'm terrified he's out on the road?" Dad asked them.

"No, it just means you care about him," Wade said to him.

Dad paced back and forth as the others stood there and waited.

"Relax Tony; he'll be fine. Have faith," Adrian advised.

"It's not him I'm worried about; it's everyone else out there. Do you know what it's like to send your child out into the world? You worry about his safety," Dad told everyone.

They all looked at him.

"Ever since Enzo was born, I worry every single day. I worry one day because he can't hear that something bad will happen," he said to them.

"Antonio, you wouldn't be a parent if you didn't worry, but you trust that you and Rain did an amazing job with him. Look at Enzo and how he turned out. Right here is a prime example of how much you both love him," Luke explained.

He looked at them.

A half-hour later, I pulled in and paralleled parked the car with ease. Thank you, Cade and Julian, for teaching me how to drive. I parked the car and turned off it. I turned to the instructor, and he signed. "Congratulations, Lorenzo, you passed."

I thanked him, and he handed me the form. I got out of the car, well, tried. Amid my excitement, I forgot to unbuckle myself. Dad sighed, and my uncles laughed.

I got loose and fell out of the car. Then I got out and ran over to Dad.

"Well," Dad asked me.

"I passed. I did everything I learned and paid attention. When an emergency vehicle came up, lights on the dash flashed. I did what I'm supposed to," I signed to Dad quickly.

"Wait, who taught you to drive," he asked me.

"Cade and Julian," I signed.

He turned and looked at my uncles, who looked around whistling while Luke laughed.

"Really? You could have told me," he said to them.

"And miss you freaking out? Oh, hell, no," Adrian said as they all laughed.

"Doofs," he sighed.

I couldn't wait. I ran into the DMV, and Dad ran after me. Yeah, I was super excited. I took my permit to the counter, and a woman signed, "Well? How did it go?"

"I passed! Isn't that exciting?" I signed back.

"It sure is," she smiled as she entered my information into the computer. Then she had me stand in front of the camera. I had the goofiest picture taken.

I couldn't help it. I was happy. You would be happy too if it took you eighteen years to get your freaking license. Dad laughed as he shook his head.

We left the DMV, and Dad let me drive the car home. It wasn't without him being nervous, but I handled it like a pro, albeit almost hitting the porch when I pulled into the driveway.

My turns still need some work.

We got out of the car and walked inside after Dad got out and kissed the cement. I rolled my eyes, drama king.

When Mom found out, she dragged me back out. She wanted to see me drive the car. So I did. Except she had me drive her all over the place. Then Mom made me go home. Mom said she is over it. Only Mom would do that.

We walked in, and Dad said, "Well?"

"He was fine although he drives like a grandpa," Mom answered.

I looked at her, then at him.

"And," Dad asked her.

"And what?" She looked at him, confused.

"Did he do okay?"

"I just said he did. Pay attention. Now I will go make dinner," Mom said as I chuckled. Dad sighed. Yeah, he never wins an argument with Mom. No one wins a case with Mom. So, I don't argue with her.
