Chapter 33: Gunshots

~Y/N's POV~

I sat up and ran my fingers through my hair before swinging my feet over the edge of the bench. I looked at David who was still crouched down. I weakly smiled at him before patting the open spot next to me. He stood up and sat next to me. He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer to him. I cuddled up next to him and sharply exhaled.

"I can't believe I lost my brother's daughter." I sighed as tears filled my eyes.

"You didn't lose her." David replied.

"I don't know who did, but whoever it was definitely didn't mean for it to happen." He added.

"I know but," I paused.

"But what?" He asked.

"What if they get so mad at me that they just kick me out again?" I considered.

"First of all, they never kicked you out in the first place, and second, you need to stop worrying about that type of stuff." David reassured me.

"I mean, you were terrified that your Dad would kick you straight out, but he hasn't yet." David continued.

"Yet." I said with much emphasis.

"We haven't told him about the pregnancy yet." I noted before a thought struck me.

"If I can't even take care of Ellie how am I going to take care of my own kid?" I questioned.

"You'll be fine. You're amazing with kids, and kid love you." David complimented.

"Besides, that's the future. We're in the present. Focus on that for now. Let everything come to you. Don't rush into the future. Just wait for it." He said trying to sound inspirational.

"That just made you sound extremely lazy." I chuckled.

"It did" David said laughing which triggered my laugh.

"At least I attempted to sound inspirational." He laughed.

"Yeah" I sighed.

"But I can reassure you that you made me feel better." I added as I smiled up at him.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. Taking in the light breeze of fall, the noise of leaves tumbling, and David's scent. I felt his warm and soft lips press against my forehead. I smiled as I wrapped my arms around David's ribs and intertwined my fingers together. I pressed my cheek against his shoulder. I could feel him rubbing my shoulder. I sighed in relaxation. He placed his own head on top of mine. I was as calm as can be. I knew that they would find Ellie. I knew everything was going to be okay. At least, I thought so. I thought so until I heard a gun go off.

My eyes shot open and I looked around. It came from over by the forest. Where Scott and Todd went. I looked up at David who looked just as terrified as me.

"What the fuck was that?" I asked as my voice shook. I knew the answer, but I just wanted to hear it from someone else. David stayed quiet. He didn't want to say it.

"David, tell me. Did you hear what I heard?" I asked again.

"Depends. Did you hear a gunshot?" He asked me.

My eyes filled with tears.

"You don't think-" I started.

"I don't know, but I'm gonna go and make sure everyone's okay." He said trying to stay calm.
