The short heels on Ava's boots clicked against the sidewalk. Her hair blew behind her shoulders as she made her way up the few steps to her driveway. She didn't want to be here, but at the same time, she didn't want to be at school either. She hated school and it was only her first year of high school. Pulling her backpack to her side, she scrambled for the house keys in one of the small pockets. The keys on the chain jingled against each other as she searched for the correct one. After finding it, she unlocked the door and walked in.
The house was a mess. Ava hadn't found the time to clean in over a week. Her mother had a new toy. Ava believed his name was Andrew, she didn't exactly know. But what she did know was he was a complete pig and she missed John.
Ava let out a sigh setting her bag on the couch that was alongside the door. She wondered why the house was so quiet, usually, the TV was going or there was arguing from the bedrooms, but it was silent. Ava ignored it, not wanting to deal with family problems at the moment and headed to the kitchen grabbing a glass of water. She leaned against the sink counter, sipping on the water as she stared into nothingness.
After finishing the glass, she set it in the sink. She frowned her brows at the materials set on the counter next to her. She stared at used needles, a lighter, burnt spoon, and an empty plastic sandwich bag. It didn't take long for her to connect the dots. Ava's mother had been an alcoholic and druggie all her life, she's learned things over the years.
Ava's heart dropped to the floor seeing the plastic bag. She knew where her mother stashed the drugs and remembered that bag being halfway full only a few days ago. She quickly made her way past the living room and down the small hallway. She went straight past her small room and into the mother's room. She barged in, coming to a halt at the doorway. She stared at the two figures. Andrew was sprawled out on the floor, not breathing. Ava looked at her mother who was sprawled out on her bed.
Ava had tears forming in her eyes as she covered her mouth desperately watching and waiting for her mother's stomach to move. When she saw her breathe faintly, Ava let out a sigh of relief and rushed back into the kitchen to find the phone. She was quick to dial the three numbers and talk to the operator.
That was one of the last times she ever saw her mother. Ava ran off to a friend after realizing that she would probably be sent into foster care. She knew how to live on her own, she wasn't worried about that. What kept her awake most nights was the fact that the actual last time she saw her mother, she was saying how disappointed she was in Ava. She had sent her mother to prison because she was trying to save her life. A few months after dashing from authorities, she became even more wanted by setting four men on fire in a house. Then, Ava Sutter became Josephine Walker.

Josephine pushed the door open roughly. She came to a halt when she saw Scott on the ground with Kate in his arms. Seth, who ran in behind Josephine, also came to a sudden stop staring at the teenage girl on the floor, blood surrounding her.
