Chapter 17: Trial and Losses

<???>

"Lance!" Diantha yelled as he was thrown harshy into his cell.

"Did you tell them anything this time?" Professor Sycamore demanded.

"No. They burned my arm. It still hurts." Lance grumbled, showing them a burn mark on his right arm.

"They hit me." Diantha said.

"OW!!! HEY, LET ME GO!! DO YOU IDIOTS HAVE NO RESPECT!? I AM THE FORMER SOOTOPOLIS GYM LEADER, A CONTEST MASTER, TOP COORDINATOR, AND THE HOE-"

"GEE, I WONDER WHO THAT IS. I swear they're going to shove Wallace off a cliff if he doesn't shut up eventually." Lance rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. All we want is info. We don't care about your stupid titles!" Another man thew Wallace into his cell, then walked out.

The door closed behind him, and they heard the lock they activated when the trials were over and they weren't needed until the next day.

"Wallace! What did they do to you!?"

"Take a look." Wallace showed them a large bruise on his leg.

"They activated the final lock just now." Diantha said worriedly.

"Hey, what is Steven's communicator doing in my hat?" Wallace took off his hat and grabbed something out of it.

Sure enough, the wide silver band with the screen was lying on the ground.

"Steven never parts with his communicator." Lance said, scratching his head in confusion.

"I thought I saw him slip it into your hat in the morning, before those idiots dragged us off again." Diantha remarked.

"Oh... I think I know what happened..." Professor Sycamore muttered.

"What!?" Lance, Wallace, and Diantha all yelled at him.

"When those idiots dragged me back, they were talking about what to do with the other prisoners..."

<Flashback>

"The Professor still won't talk?"

"No, sir."

"Very well! Take him back to the dungeon!"

2 grunts dragged Professor Sycamore out of the room and gagged and handcuffed him again.

"Start walking!" One grunt hissed.

Professor Sycamore came up with a bunch of unflattering comments in his head, then started walking, wincing with every step.

"What does Xerosic plan on doing with the prisoners?" One grunt asked.

'Hmm...' Professor Sycamore instantly honed in on their words while walking forwards.

"Continue torturing them, obviously. The Kalos Champion and Hoenn Champion aren't giving anything up so far."

"And what about the Ex-Hoenn Champion?"

The other grunt laughed wickedly.

"Oh, him? We won't be worrying about him after today. Xerosic has some OTHER plans for Steven."

'What are they talking about!?'

<End Flashback>

"Oh, no... Don't tell me..." Diantha looked horrifed.

"Exactly." Professor Sycamore nodded.

"What!?" Wallace and Lance demanded.

"They must've..."

"Killed him!? How!?" Wallace yelled.

"Ever since the incident in Hoenn, when he died from the strain of controlling the 3 Regibeasts, he hasn't been able to do really hard work. Every night, he's seemed weaker and weaker. They must've snapped the final string in him today." Diantha replied.

"No..." Lance muttered.

Then, the door opened.

"Huh? What now?" All four of them looked up.

Xerosic walked in and started pacing in front of their cells.

"You have been resilient for the past few days. However, my patience has worn down."

"What did you do!?" Lance snarled.

"Have you killed him!?" Wallace hissed.

"Not yet. Helpful that he still hasn't recovered from controlling the Regis all those years ago." Xerosic smirked, snapping his fingers.

A Malamar appeared next to him.

Diantha screamed. Wallace, Lance, and Professor Sycamore all yelled in shock.

Steven was in the grip of the Malamar.

"Steven!!" Wallace yelled.

"Hmph. Malamar!" Xerosic yelled.

Malamar threw him harshly against the cell wall.

"Have fun." Xerosic laughed evilly, walking out.

"Steven!!" Lance yelled, grabbing the bars on his cell.

"Hey! Steve!!" Wallace hollered.

"Really Wallace!?" Diantha yelled at him.

Wallace glared back at her.

"Whatever. But still, REALLY!?"

"Is he still alive?" Professor Sycamore called.

"Gardevoir, go check!" Diantha released her Gardevoir. It teleported into the cell. Then it started glowing.

Gardevoir shook its head.

Lance looked down. Diantha had tears brimming in her eyes. Wallace was gritting his teeth, and Professor Sycamore looked away.

"No..." Wallace muttered. "What's Hoenn supposed to do now?"

"Wallace, you're the Champion. It's your turn to lead them."

"...Fine. I'm calling Hoenn."

<???>

"Wha- Wallace!? Where are you!?" Norman yelled at his PokéGear.

"Dungeon somewhere."

"And why is this Steven's number?" Phoebe's voice sounded.

"About that..." Wallace said hollowly.

"Wallace?" Winona demanded.

"Steven... They... They killed him."

"WHAT!?!?!?" 12 voices yelled at the same time.

"Steven, gone?" Brawly exclaimed.

"Afraid so."

"No..." Juan muttered.

"I can't believe this!" Sidney yelled.

"We still have to continue trying, guys! He would've wanted us to continue fighting. I'm sure of it!" Drake commanded.

"Right. Well, we need to go." The call disconnected.

"The war is getting closer, I can feel it." Diantha remarked.

"But if this keeps up, what will we do?" Lance muttered.

●●●●●●

I feel like I'm killing off a bunch of people, even though only 2 people have already died.

Hmm.
