Diane's pov

Today was the day. One of my 'favorite' holidays, Valentine's Day. Though I'm not a big fan of chocolates and all that mushy stuff, I only liked it for dressing up and the class parties my elementary school had (I miss them so much). But now that I'm in high school, I don't like it as much. I literally got tired of seeing gift bags from Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body Works or anything!! We all get it: you have a boyfriend (i bet he doesn't kiss ya) who bought you some cool stuff- to be honest nobody cares. Most of these so called 'relationships' are not gonna last forever anyway.

I liked dressing in the colors, for the spirit, like other people. I didn't want to over do it, so I simply had on a red top and white jeans, along with red converses. I had my hair pulled up into a high ponytail.

I mostly celebrated it with my family. But this  year I decided not to go, since Travis was gonna be at my house after school. I was on my way to the auditorium, every Valentine's Day at my school, we all go to the auditorium first thing in the morning. After the principal makes a short speech, the assistant principal would make an announcement about the party- an afterschool event that I'm not going to, and then she would draw out 10 names from a bowl with many names in it. You just need to sign up for it. You already know I of course signed up for that!

Those 10 had a chance to win $500 in the drawing. 9 will win $50 and one will win the grand prize and have a chance to ask their crush or lover out, though most of those who won, their crushes were already taken or maybe not interested. To be honest I just wanted to win the $500, I could use it for college or something else,  like a new telescope.

I sat beside Chance, scrolling on my phone. "I never seen an auditorium before" he says quietly. "Really? So you never really been in a school? All your life you been homeschooled?" I look at him

"Yep"

"Do you have any siblings?" I ask.

"No" he shakes his head

"You're an only child?! I'm one too!" I almost get too excited. "Really?" "I guess you get everything huh?"

" What?" he looks at me confused.

"Your mom and dad? You know, get you everything since there is no one else to share anything with?"

"I don't get anything, I have to earn it."

"......So they don't buy you like, a phone or something?"

"No I have to earn it. They're really strict with me" he sighs. "They really didn't want me to go here, but they let me because they figured I needed necessary social skills. I kinda wanted to go here anyway, I just didn't tell them" "Oh....so, what did you want to be when you grow up?" I ask, noticing his slightly saddened look. "I wanted to do something in astrophysics."
