So here I am... Outside the school gate, my fifth school this year. My dad was a history substitute college professor. He was so good at his job that we had to move a lot. Of course it was annoying, making new friends and then having to leave... OH SHIT THE BELL JUST RANG!!
I quickly glanced at my info booklet as well as my timetable and dashed into the right classroom... I think. I opened the door to see 30 faces. Looking. Straight. At. Me.
"Oh hello," an old man with ruffly hair (the teacher I presume) said, "I'm Mr James, but please call me chuck. And you are..."
"Ashley." Well at least I got one thing right today...
"Well Ashley take a seat." He said pointing to a desk between a guy with light brown hair and an orange top and a guy with black top with "the chasers" written all over it. They actually weren't that bad looking. Maybe... Oh who am I kidding...
"Well! What are you waitin for?!" I looked up to see a sassy girl with curly hair glaring at me. It's my first day and already I've got a hater. great. I sat down and slumped in my chair. I think I'll keep my head down this year.
"Don't worry 'bout her." I looked up to see the brown-haired guy smiling at me. "She's just.. On edge."
"Oh. Why?" I asked but he just shook his head.
"I'm Luke, by the way." He said, holding out his hand. I shook it carefully. It felt warm but not in a sweaty kind of way. "Nice to meet you."
I just nodded. What else was I supposed to do?
"And this is Nick.' Luke said, pointing to the guy on my right. Nick just turned his head to look at me, his face unreadable. Awkward.
"Sorry he's just on edge." Luck said again. I again asked why but Luke just shook his head before saying , "Ain't my place to say."
- first lesson -
"Maths... Yay..." I groaned.
Luke chuckled before saying, " I know how ya feel."
- lunch time -
"Ahsley come sit with us." I heard Luke say.
"The fuck Luke, she's not part of this group!" I heard the sassy girl say. Seriously, what is her problem!?
"C'mon Becca, what harm can she do? Ash take no notice of her..." I suddenly felt my hand being gripped. I looked up to see Luke literally dragging me towards the table.
"Becca chill out. Not just for your sake but for the - "
"Shut up Alvin. I can fucking take care of myself."
I looked around the table. There was Luke, Nick, Rebecca the kids in my class. I then glanced round to see a Spanish guy clutching the hand of what seemed like his little sister.
"Carlos, please let me play with them," the girl whined, tears literally forming in her eyes. I felt incredibly sorry for her.
"Why don't you just let her go?" I heard myself say, "she's not a baby..." It wasn't supposed to come out like that...
Carlos glared at me before saying, "She's got problems..."
Problems? Pfft. She looked fine to me. Carlos must've sensed this because he added, "You won't get it initially... Yet. give it time..."
"Carlos pleasssssssssse." The girl exclaimed. I opened my mouth to speak but Carlos just glared at me giving me the shut the fuck up look.
"Sarah, you those people will do anything to hurt you. I don't want you to be emotionally damaged or physically. I just want you to be safe, yes?"
Sarah nodded her head reluctantly before tucking in to her heart cookie. No wonder she had no friends, her brother constantly dragging her everywhere he went or not letting her out of his sight. It was one of the many reasons that I was happy to be an only child.
"Ash has got a point, Carlos," I turned to see Nick staring at an upset Sarah who had just finished her cookie. "Trust me, let her live. You don't wanna make the same mistake I..."
"Yeah we all know Nick." Carlos replied angrily.
"The fuck you do." He said, rolling his eyes.
"Guys, guys c'mon, " I heard Luke say, staring at me. "Anyways, ash what's ya story? How'd you end up here?"
I sighed. It was the same explanation every time.
"My dad's a history professor. He's good at his job. A bit too good. We move around a lot since he gets so many promotions. So this is my fifth school this year. I don't think I'll be here too long though so..."
"So? You expect us to cry because of that?"Rebecca spat, a disgusted look on her face. I didn't even try to dignify that with a response.
"Well, we better make the most of it." I looked up to see Luke smiling at me.
"Yeah. Let's."
Authors note...
I know that the job isn't one where you have to move a lot but it was all I could work with so cut me slack.. Btw all the kids in this are 15 - 16
