Wait what....

As time passed, I began to adjust to school life. It was the first time (in a long time) where Dad and I would be staying put for a while. I actually felt kind of relieved. Something about my new school made me want to stay. Speaking of school...

I fit well into my new 'gang'. Sarah welcomed me with open arms (literally flinging them around my waist to the point where I couldn't breathe). Carlos was also a lot more friendly to me, even when I critized him about his... Big brother role.

"Look, it's my duty to protect her Ash. I know that may not seem like a big deal to you, being an only child and all, but Sarah is all I have... Family wise."

"What about..."

"Don't."

Ok, maybe not that friendly...

However, Rebecca began to treat me like a person and not some little kid. She even conquered the impossible - apologising!

"I'm sorry I gave you shit back there," she began. "It's just, I'm on edge, y'know. You and Alvin could probably relate..."

You think?

"Look I'm not a little kid, I can take care of myself," I said through gritted teeth.

"Yeah, guess we do have something in common. My dad is always giving me shit. But he doesn't know a damn thing..."

I had to wonder what she meant by that. But for some odd reason, I didn't feel the need to insult her, or at the very least unintentionally upset her. So instead I meekly apologised and left her Alvin. Poor guy....

But the best part about my gang were Luke and Nick. Though be being best friends, overtime I realised that they couldn't be more different. Luke was genuinely a pretty nice guy. He was a good friend and he did care for my well being as well as others. That was the problem. That was all he cared about...

"Just be careful," a girl called Bonnie warned me. "Don't get me wrong, Luke is a nice guy and all but, y'know, he's smart. And sometimes that does more harm than good."

Again, my mind didn't quite process that. What did she mean by smart?

Nick on the other hand, couldn't be more different. He was a lot easier to read; you could read his emotions purely on his eyes (or whether he was drunk or high). But I guess that had a lot to do with the fact that Nick was practically raised by his uncle, Pete. I had met Pete before, and was a sweet, smart man. But he could be very hostile and brutally honest about harsh realities of the world. And that seemed to give Nick very little confidence. But then again, Nick's dad was barely around ( or a piece of shit when he was, according to uncle Pete) and Nick's mom? Well we all know about that. Problem was, I wasn't too sure if Nick knew that I knew. Well he must've. He didn't seem that drunk. But I'll probably find out sooner or later...

So that was why I got up early in the morning to head to school. As I approached it, I began to hope that Luke or Nick, or maybe both were there... In the classroom lonely, wanting some company.

"Excuse me?" A voice said, but not just any old voice. It was cold and scruffy, the kind of one you'd find in old people. But as I turned round, I found it was even more difficult to work out his age. He had brown hair, with grey streaks across. He was wearing a deep brown coat, which was nowhere near, 21st century fashion. But hey, this guy didn't seem like an Avon representative...

"Yeah?" I asked. It didn't quite come out the way I expected. I soundly scared, like a little kid.

The guy then peered down at my shirt. Oh god what's he gonna do next?! I better get out of here before... Before

"So what school do you go to? Couldn't be that one down the road a couple minutes away right?"

I just nodded. What else was I supposed to do?

"Well that's a good school. Always liked it."

"Soo.. Why aren't you there?" I heard myself say.

The guy turned his head looking around before saying, "we had some differences."

"Anyway, I have a couple of friends who go to this school. Maybe you've seen em."

"Try me."

"Couple of dudes. One with an uncle. Spanish guy with his sister. This black guy, and his pretty little girlfriend."

"Rebecca?"

"Yes her, so you do know em?"

Oh shit, what did I just do?! I suddenly realised my mistake and began to walk off. I expected the guy to follow but he didn't.

"You have no idea who those people are do you?"

Wait what?

I turned my head, "What do you mean?"

The guy just smiled before saying, "you have a real good day now." And turned the corner. I didn't dare look back.

I bolted for my classroom. I didn't think the guy was following me, but I wasn't taking any chances...

As soon as I opened the door I was greeted by two smiles. Great. Any other day I would be overjoyed. But today, after what just happened, I need to gather my thoughts.

"Earth to ash." I see a hand move up and down. I'm too slow zoning in the figure out if it was Luke or Nick. God they can be so annoying...

"You alright Ashley? You're acting strange?" Nick said, looking concerned.

"How many fingers am I holding up?" Luke said, shoving his hand in my face, as if I was that short-sighted.

"Four."

Luke and Nick just stared at each other.

"Shit, Nick, she's going blind..."

"Fuck man, what we gonna do?"

"Your thumb ain't a finger idiot." I was laughing like mad. I looked up to see Luke chuckling and Nick just shaking his head, playfully.

"Seriously though Ash, what's with you today?"

Not this again...

"Alright, alright..."

I told them everything. Their faces went from warm and playful, to stone cold. They were particularly angry about the Rebecca bit. Y'know, when I mentioned her to that guy.

"The fuck would you do that for?!" Nick screamed me. Wow, he was a bit aggro at times.

Luke put a hand on Nick's shoulder before saying, "go easy on her, man. She doesn't know."

"Right, right. I'm sorry."

"Look the guy's name is Carver. He used to come here, but he got expelled."

"Why?" I asked, but Luke and Nick were barely listening.

"We gotta tell Carlos and Rebecca. Oh and Sarah too."

"Why?" Nothing.

"Alvin's gonna be pissed."

"Does he know about..."

"WHAT? WHY? WHO? WHEN? WHERE?!" I was sick and tired of being ignored.

"You'll find out soon enough." Luke said. "But we gotta go, cmon."

And with that, I was hacked out of the classroom by Luke and Nick. They sure are a match...
