"Aren't you going to say hello?" Hmmm, seems cheery. Probably doesn't remember me.
"Um, hi." I said shyly. I could feel my heart thumping so loudly, I wonder if he could hear it too.
"Hey." He replied, as if it was a totally normal greeting session.
"Oh, and thanks by the way for helping me back there." I had seemed to suddenly gain my confidence back. Matthew just nodded, smiling to himself. There wasn't really much else to say, so I began to make my way.
"Wait... Hold on, you can't just leave!" He called. Shit...
"Why?" I questioned, in my most casual tone.
"You need to tell me what you're doing out of class."
"Isn't it obvious?" I replied, obviously referring to Arvo.
"Hmm, not to me. Why was he chasing you in the first place? Can't be something to do with your boyfriend getting into another fight? Mind you, he was a little less harsh on him to be fair." And my eyes are fixated to the eyepatch.
"How is it?" I asked, "you're not... Blind, right?"
Matthew smiled at my seemingly over-dramatic response. "Nah... It's just a bit bruised, that's all. Though I gotta say, your boyfriend is a pretty good hit." He chuckled a bit.
I don't know what I found more disturbing; the fact that Matthew was so casual about the whole situation, or the fact that he actually thought Nick was my...
"He's not my boyfriend..." I corrected him, though I wouldn't exactly call him a friend either. More like... Best friends.
"What? Really?" Matthew raised his eyebrows in surprise, which confused me even more.
"What?"
"Nothing, it's just... From what I saw --- or felt --- I wouldn't call that guy a 'friend'. Unless you're telling me he does that to every girl who happens to run across suspicious looking guys like me." And I had to smile at that. There was nothing remotely dodgy about Matthew. He had that preppy kind of image, and to be fair, that pretty much described him anyways.
"No..."
"Then he must really like you..."
"Like me?"
"Like 'like like' like 'in love' like. Am I using too many likes..?"
"Yeah... And that wouldn't make any sense... I have a boyfriend." I smiled silently to myself at the reminder of Luke. We had some good memories...
"So? I'm gay and I still get girls giving me the eye, makes no difference. But as long as your happy with who you're with and who you are, well, that's all that matters."
"I am." Luke makes me happy; somehow even in my darkest moments he seems to bring a smile on my face. Sometimes by snogging, or times by making up some crazy ass story (aka the Panda) or even being a total gentleman and giving me his own leather jacket to wear, despite the fact that he was probably numbed himself. And maths... Well, we have the craziest of memories... Something I don't and won't want to share with anyone else, so yeah, I would say I'm happy.
Matthew nodded, fiddling with his eyepatch and cast. I had the uncomfortable experience of watching his smile and mood slowly fade.
"About everything... I'm so sorry... I really am. And I get it if you're mad, I do. I just --- I don't get how you can be so calm about this... About everything that's just happened."
"Not much that can fix it now," He shrugged half-heartedly, his expression neutral. He then turned away, sighing and rubbing his forehead with his working arm.
