Why is this...

It was a pretty long walk home. I avoided the bush where Carver and his gang had ambushed me, but it meant that I'd have to take the long way home, and my legs were starting to ache. What made matters worse was that when I did finally get home, I had to spend half an hour making some sob story to my dad about why I was so late. I didn't really want to tell him about the Carver incident since the chances were, we'd move again. And I really didn't want that to happen, because starting again was starting to get tiresome. Especially when you've done it five times before.

It turns out that I'm a pretty good liar...

"I had some homework to finish off, dad. History homework..."

"Really?! Ashley, when have you ever been interested in history?"

"I'm not. But I'm also not interested in spending my lunchtime in detention."

"You sure you don't have some mystery boyfriend on his bike waiting for you at the end of school?"

"NO!" I shouted, laughing slightly. Though if Luke made an entrance like that, I sure would be late home everyday...

"Dad, no. I thought you'd be happy that I'm taking an interest. I didn't inherit all of mum's genes y'know."

Dad's smile faded and I instantly felt guilty. Great, I've just reminded him of something we promised to never mention again.

"Dad I'm - "

"No, it's ok hon. You must miss your mum sometimes, right?"

Pahahaha. No.

"Of course not. She deserved everything she got. You know it, and I know it. She can go rot for all I care..."

"She still loves you Ash."

"Well I don't. So there."

Dad shrugged a bit and went into the kitchen to start dinner. Why he was pitying mum was beyond me. She deserved everything she got and there was nothing she could do to fix what she did....

"What took you so long?" Bonnie asked as soon as I reached the school gate.

"Carver and his gang. I'm not walking anywhere near that bush from now on..."

"Well, I walk with you past the bush every morning and evening if you like." Bonnie said, but it sounded more like a statement, instead of a question.

"Um yeah sure." Bonnie can be so sweet sometimes.

"How's things with Luke going?" Bonnie surprises me by asking.

"Good... Oh I don't know Bonnie. I mean, he seems like a nice guy and all, but by the way you and Nick are describing him, he doesn't seem like the guy I thought he was."

"Nick?"

"Yeah, Luke's best friend."

"No, I know who he is but, I didn't think Nick would say a bad word about him. He's usually a - "

"A what, Bonnie?"

"Is that the bell? Shit, I gotta go. Bye Ash..."

Yep, you guessed it ; Worst . Cop out. Ever.

Lunchtime

Luke was in detention since he 'couldn't be bothered to do fractions'. But we practically all know that maths is Luke's weak point by far. Of course I tried to help him, but I'm not any better. I ended up copying this guy whose name is... Omid? I don't know, he seems either geeky or a class clown. Or maybe both. Anyway, while I got off scotch-free, Luke had to stay but until he answered all the questions. And judging by how bad he is at maths alone, he could be there a while.
