Kanen knew a hundred and one ways this could've been avoided.
If he just had the audacity to stop smiling at her, stop showing her compassion for just a second, this wouldn't have happened.
They met on a day time forgot, one couldn't remember and one wouldn't even bother to. Who knew normal day at St. Despair's can lead to months of pain and torment for the blonde haired, glasses wearing, computer professional?
It was ironic for its name too. Rumor has it that the legendary Junko Enoshima's dad founded this school as a rival for Hope's Peak.
But that doesn't matter when someone died, huh?
It was the first day of school, that they could both agree on, she was sitting in the waiting louge, an IV drip connected to her arm.
He sat next to her nervously. She looked up from her book to look at him before quickly reinstating her gaze.
"H-Hello." He covered his mouth when he stuttered, but the girl still answered.
"Hello, are you applying to St. Despair also?" Kanen nodded.
"Yeah."
"Well, I wish you luck, then."
Minutes felt like hours when he was sat there. Kanen looked over at the mysterious girl, only sensing an ever flowing stream of misery.
"I'm Kanen Tsuumaki, just so you know."
"A pleasure to meet you, Tsuumaki-kun. I am Miyadera Shinguji." She held out her hand for him to shake it, "Let us acquaint afterwards."
He took her hand into a firm handshake, self conscious about the nervous sweat on his hands.
But this was just the beginning.

A sudden burst of energy came when he found the envelope with St. Despair's signature seal. He almost ripped the acceptance letter when he 'oh, so carefully' tore off the ends.
He pulled out the letter and only needed to read the first words:
'It is an absolute honor to inform you that you have been successfully admitted into St. Despair's High School for The Skillfully Capable.'
He jumped around in his excitement and threw out the torn out envelope. He cuddled the letter in his chest and released the breath he held in forever.
He wonders what this Miyadera girl is doing right now. Was she opening her letter? Was she jumping up and down with her brother if she got accepted?
Who knows now?

The entrance of the school was cluttered with students, both excited and drained.
It wasn't hard to spot his friend's IV drip stand poking out from the crowd. Kanen
raised his hand above the crowd, unknowingly shoving his way through to get to her.
He mistakenly judged her location to be way farther and almost knocked her over. He quickly caught her and stood her up.
"You're okay?"
She wiped off her uniform, "Yes, I am. Congratulations, Tsuumaki-kun."
His face caught aflame for a second, "Yeah, same with you."
"Thank you."

They unconsciously walked together to the conference room to retrieve their schedules. The top left corner indicated their classes.
