Rantaro was always smiling. So far, there hasn't been a moment where he wasn't. It was as if they had a 'Guarantee Happiness' gift that came with death, but Korekiyo was still frowning, he was still pessimistic.
Is this another secret Rantaro was hiding?
He picked his head up and broke out of his own trance. In front of him were three blue pillars of light, Rantaro stood next to the far right one.
"These are memory pillars, they produce hallucinations that seem that you're in said memory from oldest to most recent."
Korekiyo walked in front of the pillar, the light was soft and gentle against his eyes. It was very welcoming as if it was safe, Korekiyo looked over at Rantaro.
"Are you coming with me?"
"Of course, my job right now is to save my friends. It's obvious that's a bit of a cliche but it's the truth. Now-"
Rantaro grabbed Korekiyo's arm and pushed themselves into the light.
"Let's go!"
The scenery changed in a matter of seconds, it was beautiful. Clear skies, distant mountains, houses far from sight, anyone would die to live here.
Rantaro and Korekiyo were floating above a certain house, it looked too normal to be by itself. It racked Korekiyo's memory a little but it was still fuzzy.
"This is the 1st major event from your life, it seems that said event occurred very early."
"Let's investigate."
Korekiyo and Rantaro descended through the roof, phasing through it as if it was air. They flew into the kitchen first to see four individuals all conversating over small plates of rice.
One was a well-built male that sat next to a slightly smaller woman with long hair and a grey and white kimono. Across from them was a tall girl with blood red lipstick and a small boy that imitated her facial features and long hair.
"That boy must be me then. How did an innocent face like that grow up to become such a disgrace?"
"C'mon, stop with the self-deprecating stuff! Everyone has something that makes up the uniqueness of their character, especially you!"
"What's redeemable about me?"
"Your calm personality, how mysterious you are, the many stories you can tell... and so much more. I would mention your looks but your personality alone is enough to make you an awesome person. You have more than enough character traits to make you redeemable, don't forget that."
Korekiyo nodded and smiled, evident by the curling of the zipper on his mask.
"If you say it, I guess it's true."
Korekiyo walked forward to listen in on their conversation, he peered through the doorway with Rantaro's head underneath his.
The assumed parents took their plates to wash them while young Korekiyo and his sister whispered among themselves as they walked back to their rooms. Korekiyo and Rantaro walked a little ways behind them but close enough to hear them.
"Mother and Father are going away again? Why can't they stop travelling and stay with us?"
"They need the money, the stuff they're selling has a greater value in other countries."
"What do they do anyway?"
"You wouldn't understand."
The younger Korekiyo pouted.
"You're too vague sometimes."
Korekiyo's sister shook her head in annoyance before going their own separate ways. The scenery slowly turned white until younger Korekiyo closed the door on entering his room.
Korekiyo held onto Rantaro's arm as they floated in place, Korekiyo's temperature slowly turning colder than usual.
"What's happening?"
"We're just being transported to the second part of your memory, that's all."
Korekiyo visibly relaxed and released his grip, moving his hand into Rantaro's.
"Is this okay?"
"As long as it's you, I'm alright with anything."
The silence after the statement was deafening, it wasn't even awkward. The air around them was as soft as cotton candy, as if the amount of time that just past felt like seconds.
It was night time, raining and depressing. There were wails and cries of agony, Korekiyo had an inkling of what's to come.
They walked side by side to the living room where the TV was on. One was sobbing and the other was comforting him, 'Two found dead in an alleyway' the moving news line said.
"I TOLD MOTHER AND FATHER TO RECONSIDER!"
"Maybe their customers didn't like their products. Mother said they like the stuff they had."
"IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE!"
Korekiyo sighed and Rantaro patted his shoulder. He couldn't cry, it was a pitiable sign of weakness. He wouldn't cry, it'll make Rantaro feel bad for him. Korekiyo took a deep sigh and closed his eyes as a single tear rolled down his mask.
When he opened his eyes they were back in the void. The pillar of light they were standing now had a bright golden sheen to it. Korekiyo wiped his cheek as Rantaro lead him to the far right pillar of light.
Onto the next memory...
