"seriously, though, you're not actually gonna do that, are you?" ryan questioned josh after the latter had voiced his plan of befriending bench boy.

"why wouldn't i?" josh asked, his voice slightly annoyed. "he can't be worse than you."

"says the guy who's house was literally broken into by the guy," ryan fought back, cocking his brows slightly.

"he didn't break into my house! just our property," josh sighed, tired of always correcting his friends, who always took the whole thing further than what it had actually been.

"whatever, that should still be enough god damn evidence for you!" ryan answered, his voice growing slightly louder. "jesus, you're like the people after kennedy was assassinated! the truth is right under your nose, but you still can't see it. you straight up refuse to!"

"i thought we were friends," josh quietly said, feeling the tears welling up behind his eyes, threatening to spill out.

"we are, josh, i just can't believe you're being so naïve."

"whatever," josh huffed before half-heartedly waving his hand as a goodbye and leaving ryan to go and talk to bench boy.

he looked at the back of the boy while approaching him. he couldn't help but feel slightly menaced by the bigger boy, who looked very, very tall sitting on the small bench.

"h-hey," josh quietly said, carefully tapping the boys left shoulder to get his attention.

josh held his breath as the boy turned his head around to look at him. for a moment the boy almost, almost had a small smile playing on his lips, but it was gone as fast as it came.

"what d'you want?" the boy asked, looking josh up and down, letting the book he was reading a few seconds back rest on his right thigh.

"c-can i, uh, sit?" josh nervously asked, gesturing towards the space left on the bench.

"i assume so, it's a free country we live in," the boy snarkily replied and continued to stare at josh as he sat down beside him, trying not to touch the boy. it was a hard job, considering he was quite well sprawled across the whole of the small bench.

"s-so, what's y-your name?" josh asked after a few minutes of silence and the boy just amusedly staring at him, seemingly studying every single inch of his body.

"why would you want to know?" the boy asked, clearly challenging josh to come up with a reply to rival all the replies he was getting.

"so i don't have to keep referring to you as 'bench boy', i guess?"

"but what if i think it's cute?"
