"You're starring", she mumbled without opening her eyes. There were golden rays of sunlight caressing her cheeks. They made her hair shimmer and her freckles even more beautiful.
He said nothing but she felt his eyes on her back, a cold touch compared to the warmth around her head.
"Where are you?", his voice was neither commanding nor firm.
He sounded almost at peace.
"I can't tell you", was the only logical answer she could give him. Yet she knew that it was more for the safety of her friends than for the happiness of herself, both of them she guessed.
There was still a war inside his soul. Always fighting, defending, attacking.
Would they ever find a way to overcome this conflict? How? Neither of them expected a change while it was all they wanted.
"Okay."
She was surprised by his answer and he knew it even without the help of their bond. It was all on her half hidden face.
Slowly he walked towards her.
He didn't know where he was nor did it matter to him. She was there, in front of him.
After months of chasing down the resistance, months in which both of them ignored the presence of the other whenever their connection brought them together, he finally got the chance to look at her, truly look at her. The woman that rejected him, the scavenger, the girl that still felt alone sometimes. He knew all those feelings and he wasn't sure whether or not she knew certain things about himself as well. However, she acted as if she didn't care and before he came here today he had tried to do the same.
"Look at me", they were only one feet apart and though everything in her mind told her not to listen, she couldn't resist him. Not again.
From the moment she opened her eyes, first blinded and than finally accustoming to the sudden light, she felt a warmth rising in her chest that had nothing to do with the sun.
There he was, a tall dark figure that totally contrasted with the tenderness in his eyes. Normally his expression had always been hard to read but in this very moment there was nothing in the look he gave her that could have reminded her of their last interaction now so many months ago.
He watched her considering this new situation. It felt impossible to find a single word to say.
But finally he was the one breaking the silence, a sad smile on his lips.
"I'm glad you're alright", he said voice deep but in a gentle tone. "Me too", were the words that carefully left her lips. It took her some time to find her voice as steady as she wanted it to sound, so after some minutes she asked: "Are you alright too?"
The absurdity of the moment almost made her laugh. She felt like a fool but she knew that he would answer her question anyways.
"Yeah." There was no reason for him to lie, right now he felt better than any other time over the last weeks.
She just nodded, there were so many questions left to ask.
What are you doing here? Why do we talk? Didn't we always ignore each other? What does this mean now? Aren't we supposed to be enemies?
And ultimately there was one left.
What changed?
Was this always meant for them?
To retreat only to find a way back together?
"Don't", he said in a low voice, "I don't know the answer."
He had stopped looking at her and was now watching the sky. Brown eyes lost in the distance, certainly he was far away in his mind.
"Fine", she said and stood beside him in silence.
It wasn't uncomfortable, no, but she disliked the fact that he was confusing her. This sudden willingness to have a conversation that seemed to end before it really began.
But she didn't really got time to become upset about it because he interrupted her thoughts again.
"You know?", he asked as if it wasn't the strangest thing for him to be so composed. "I really don't know what got me starting this conversation today. But-", he didn't know how to finish.
"But you wonder whether or not we should have done this a long time ago?", she helped him and he nodded. "Yeah, me too."
Of course had she known that ignorance was not a solution. But their relationship had every right to be called complicated and while a war was going on around them, people expected her to be the hero and her friends talked about ending the man standing in front of her, she never really saw a reason to talk to him and through that to possibly make things even worse.
She still felt compassion for him and if she was honest with herself: affection.
Nevertheless she was used to wait until she could be sure that there was a truth in what she wanted to see.
And so began the time of growing conversations and feelings that neither of them dared to put into words.

Der Nachteil an Oneshots ist, dass ich nie weiß, wann sie enden sollen🤔
Aber vielleicht komme ich auf das ein oder andere noch in zukünftigen Storys zurück😊
