Chapter 53: Girl Chat

(Y/N) left the tree and made her way to the main area. She walked past apes, some worked, some relaxed, some played. Then she saw Lake sitting down while she watched a few younger apes, Liam, Andrew and Nova mess around, they got along really well. (Y/N) walked closer to Lake and sat down next to her. 

"Hey Lake." She greeted. 

"Oh, hi (Y/N)! I haven't hung out with you in a while." Lake signed. 

"I know right. Glad we're able to catch up though." She chuckled. 

Lake laughed, "Yeah. So...how are the new humans going?"

"Yeah, they're fine. Why?" 

"No reason. What the oldest one's name again?"

"Damon..?"

"Yeah, him. He seems nice."

"I guess he's okay." 

"I kind of want to get to know him more.."

"What? Why? I mean, I don't care, I'm just curious."

Lake laughed and gently pushed (Y/N) by the shoulder. "I knew it!" She signed as she gave a few hoots of laughter. 

"Knew what?" (Y/N) asked, trying to seem clueless. 

"You like him!" 

"What?! No, that's crazy."

"(Y/N)... I know how it feels to like someone... to love someone. And you like him."

(Y/N) rolled her eyes quickly and gave a sharp sigh. "Fine, yes, I guess I might like him a little bit. But you can't tell anyone... because he likes me too."

"I am so smart."

"You knew that too?"

"It's pretty obvious. Not to everyone, just me. So? Are you guys a thing?"

"No, not really. He did ask me if I wanted to date him but I said no. I'm just not ready and I think it's too early." 

Lake nodded, understanding (Y/N)'s opinion. She was glad that there was a chance for (Y/N) to potentially find love. She always knew (Y/N) was unsure if she would ever meet someone. And maybe Damon could be that special someone. But Lake also knew if Damon isn't what he says he is or if he ever tries to hurt (Y/N), the entire ape community would have something to say about it. 

They talked for about an hour before they hugged and (Y/N) walked off to go find Damon. She found him sharpening a spear near the massive pond that everyone shared but it could still be an area where you can go for peace and quiet. 

"Hey, how are you?" (Y/N) asked in sign-language to test Damon. 

"I'm good, you?" Damon replied. 

"Pretty good. And it also seems like you're improving." 

"Yeah, I practise a lot and I think I'm getting better." Damon smiled. 

"I think you are too." (Y/N) admitted. "I just wanted to apologise for not being able to make up my mind. I know it must be frustrating for you, waiting for an answer." 

"You don't need to apologise! I understand how you're feeling. You're uncertain because you've never been in a relationship before. Maybe I'm just rushing it." 

"Maybe I'm going too slow or you're going too fast. I don't know. But what I do know is that you're actually really nice and I think there's a chance we could date in the future. But for now, I think we should just remain friends, until we believe the moment is right. Sound good?"

"Yep!"

"So that's our deal!" (Y/N) signed to Lake. Lake smiled. She thought (Y/N) deserved love and happiness after all she'd been through. 

"Sounds like a good idea! And don't worry, I haven't told anyone. I know you want to keep this a secret." 

"Thanks. But the thing is, I don't know why I want to keep it a secret. Maybe it's because I don't want to be seen as weak or too trusting towards the humans who haven't been here for as long as we have. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I've been saying no to Damon." (Y/N) thought out loud (even though she didn't 'say' it). Lake nodded in understanding. 

"I get it. But I want you to remember that we see you as a strong and great leader. And that will never change, no matter what happens." Lake signed as she smiled. "Now you just have to tell me when have your first ki-" 

"Stop right there. That is not happening for a long time." (Y/N) said laughing. Lake laughed with her. "You know a lot more on relationships than me." (Y/N) laughed. 

"I'm just telling you what I know and what I think is right. ...But... only you... will know... what's... right... for you." Lake signed then said wisely. (Y/N) smiled to her friend. Quite honestly, Lake was her best friend. She knew she was extremely close to Nova, Rocket, Maurice and a few of the other apes. But the only person she could truly relate to, and talk to, was Lake. They were mentally about the same age so they got along really well. And with every passing day, they became more and more close.
