Chapter 31: New Recruit

Their journey to find the Colonel had begun. The apes were on horses while (Y/N) flew in the air. Caesar, Rocket and Luca had guns while Maurice and (Y/N) didn't. Eventually, they came across an abandoned-looking village. There were a few buildings with smashed windows and a few horses. They all stood about 200 metres away on a small hill. 

"Guards think soldiers here." Luca signed. 

"Always fires burning." (Y/N) added. They all went down through the entrance of the village. "No one here." Rocket signed as they all got off their horses. 

"Search the area." Caesar ordered before walking into a building. The others continued to walk slowly through the village. (Y/N) stopped. 

"Wait...." She said and the other three apes stopped. They looked confused before seeing a man walk out of a building while holding multiple sticks. He froze once he saw the threatening-looking four. 

"I'm just gonna put this down." He said as he slowly dropped the sticks then immediately reached for his gun. But as soon as his hand touched his gun, he was shot and killed. The four gasped then looked towards where the bullets came from. They saw Caesar slowly walking out of the building with a little smoke coming out of the end of his gun. He looked to the others with a face of no expression but also saying, "fuck off." Maurice looked at him stunned and shocked as if saying, "what the fuck was that for?!" while the others didn't really change their expressions. Caesar only continued to walk over to the dead man. The symbol that the Colonel's force used was tattooed on his neck. 

"What's he doing out here alone?" Luca signed. 

"Maybe he's a deserter?" Rocket questioned. Then they looked towards a building when they heard sounds of broken glass. (Y/N) flew over to the building and tried the door. 

"Locked." She signed. The apes made their way over to the building and Caesar used his gun to bust the door open. Rocket was right behind him, holding his gun into the house. They looked to the floor and found the shelves were lying on the floor and jars had fallen off and smashed onto the ground. They slowly walked through the house and found a room at the end. Sounds were coming from the room. 

Caesar kicked the door open and found a person hiding in the blankets of their bed. Caesar continued to point his gun at the mysterious person as Rocket and Luca copied his action. 

(Y/N) stood behind Rocket and Luca and watched as Maurice walked passed Caesar and gently put his hand on Caesar's gun and lowered it. Caesar then realised why he did, he was pointing a gun at a child. Caesar looked away from the child and pretended it wasn't even there. 

"Look around. Take what you can." He said before leaving the room with Rocket. Luca looked back to Maurice and the child then left the room with the others. Maurice remained by the bed side and looked at the kid. (Y/N) also remained in the room. She watched Maurice interact with the child. He found a toy on the ground and handed it to the child. 

The kid came out into the light and revealed itself to be a girl. Around 12 years old. She took the toy and looked to (Y/N). Amazement was in her eyes as she examined (Y/N)'s wings. (Y/N) smiled at the girl then slowly left the room. 

She found Rocket and Luca grabbing supplies as Caesar stood watch at the door. (Y/N) stood next to Caesar. Maurice came out while looking at Caesar then back to the room with the little girl and back to Caesar. 

"Something wrong with her." He signed "I don't think she can speak." Caesar looked to the floor then to the others. 

"Come." He said. Then he walked out the door with (Y/N) beside him. They walked back to their horses. As Caesar got on, he looked back to the building where they found the little girl. Maurice saw his gaze and turned in the same direction. They saw the girl walking up to the dead man. 

"Must of been her dad. Maybe that's why he left the Colonel's base, to protect her." (Y/N) signed. Maurice looked back to Caesar. 

"She'll die out here alone." He signed. 

"We cannot take her, Maurice." Caesar said. 

"I understand. But I cannot leave her." Caesar looked to the girl then to his sister. She shrugged her shoulders. 

"Your choice." She signed.

They traveled along the beach, it was almost sundown. Caesar had decided to let the little girl come with them. (Y/N) had taken the man's gun along with many bullets she found in the house. As they walked, Caesar looked back to the girl, who rode on Maurice's horses. She looked at him while hugging Maurice's back. 

She looked up to (Y/N), who flew in the sky high above them. Caesar looked up to his sister then gave his horse a small kick so he would be in the lead. As they continued to ride, they came across a small opening in the rocks. They trotted through and eventually found a large group of tents with fires burning. They knew it was a place where the soldiers were camping out. So that's where they planned to go.
