Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca. This monocotyledonous tree is native to the arid deserts of the southwestern United States, specifically southern California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. where it is confined mostly to the between 400 and 1,800 m (1,300 and 5,900 ft) elevation, where it is confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400 and 1,800 m (1,300 and 5,900 ft) elevation. It thrives in the open grasslands of Lost Horse Valley and Queen Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. A dense Joshua tree forest also exists on the Cima Dome(Cima, California) in the Mojave National Preserve; northeast of Kingman, Arizona, in Mohave County, Arizona; as well as along U.S. 93 between the towns of Wickenburg and Wikieup, and designated as the Joshua Tree Parkway of Arizona.

The trees got their name from a group of Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century: The tree's role in guiding them through the desert combined with its unique shape reminded them of a biblical story in which the prophet Joshua keeps his hands reached out for an extended period to guide the Israelites in their conquest of Canaan (Joshua 8:18-26). However, no direct or contemporary attestation of this origin exists, and the name Joshua tree is not recorded until after Mormon contact; moreover, the physical appearance of the Joshua tree more closely resembles another similar story told about Moses.

Joshua Tree wands are particularly tricky due to the fibrous nature of the wood, resulting in but few wandmakers attempting to craft them. Joshua is attracted to masters who have a peaceful and docile nature. It has been a favored wand for divination, as its nature proves for very extensive visions even hundreds of years into the future, and many famous seers have used Joshua wands in the American Southwest and Mexico.
