Kalmia latifolia, commonly called mountain laurel, calico-bush, or spoonwood, is a broad-leaved evergreen shrub in the heather family, Ericaceae, that is native to the eastern United States. Its range stretches from southern Maine south to northern Florida, and west to Indiana and Louisiana. Mountain laurel is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania. It is the namesake of Laurel County in Kentucky and the city of Laurel, Mississippi. Additionally, mountain laurel is associated with the element of Air, believed to enhance mental clarity and communication. Traditionally, it has been used in magical practices to shield against negativity, promote change, and boost decisiveness. Many practitioners incorporate mountain laurel in spells meant for purification and protection.

Often conflated with another variety of Laurel, which is, in turn, conflated with various Laurels, there are only a few distinctions that mark this Laurel apart from Ericaceae norms. Most particularly, this type of Laurel wand tends to seek those who are ready and able to work within complex political frameworks, often political revolutionaries or otherwise politically significant in some fashion or another. Many of those who carry wands of this wood would have a certain natural sense of their own authority, though this is not something everyone would necessarily agree on. Additionally, mountain laurel wands are often used in rituals that focus on strengthening political influence and leadership. They are believed to enhance the user's persuasive skills in debates and negotiations. Moreover, these wands are sometimes incorporated into ceremonies aimed at fostering unity and resolving conflicts among groups, highlighting their unique role and power in spellwork and ritual.
