Diospyros virginiana is a persimmon species commonly called the American persimmon, common persimmon, eastern persimmon, simmon, possumwood, possum apples, or sugar plum. It ranges from southern Connecticut/Long Island to Florida, and west to Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa. The tree grows wild but has been cultivated for its fruit and wood since prehistoric times by Native Americans.

A difficult and unusual wood to work with, persimmon wands are a rarity as they only accept being paired with cores that are the best of the best. It is extremely prized in Korea, Japan, as well as in parts of the United States, for its reputation for choosing great musicians as their owners. This is due to the natural dexterity and grace of these wizards and witches. These wands also desire perfectionism and an exacting mindset.
