Pinus elliottii, commonly known as slash pine, is a conifer tree in the Southeastern United States. Slash pine is named after the "slashes" – swampy ground overgrown with trees and bushes – that constitute its habitat. Other common names include swamp pine, yellow slash pine, and southern Florida pine. Historically, slash pine has been an important economic timber for naval stores, turpentine, and resin. Slash pine has two different varieties: Pinus elliottii var. elliottii and Pinus elliottii var. densa.
Slash Pine has lost popularity across most of the Southeast, but it remains popular in Florida. A wand for the sorrowful, unfortunate, and those who are often unlucky in love, many when first presented with this wand may try to flee from it. However, a Slash Pine wand never chooses someone who does not have at least one of these traits and a wizard may be hard-pressed to find a wand that would match them as precisely. Individuals chosen by a Slash Pine wand may isolate themselves from others for a multitude of others, most usually in an attempt to protect themselves or others from harm (those chosen by these wands are often but not always unusually empathetic), due to being offended by someone or due to a crush that they may perceive as unfortunate or awkward. They are also often victimized by others, and, while many bearers of such wands start quite naive, they are known to frequently become exceptionally cynical with age, and can be as prickly as this plant's thorns when provoked.
