Pinus elliottii, commonly known as slash pine, is a conifer tree in the Southeastern United States. Slash pine is named after the "slashes" – swampy ground overgrown with trees and bushes – that constitute its habitat. Other common names include swamp pine, yellow slash pine, and southern Florida pine. Historically, slash pine has been an essential economic timber for naval stores, turpentine, and resin. With its tall, straight trunk and adaptability to wet conditions, the tree's resilience and toughness resonate with its magical significance. In the realm of magic, slash pine is celebrated for its protective qualities, often symbolizing refuge amidst adversity. This natural trait is mirrored in its magical uses, where it is sought after for charms of protection and resilience. Slash pine has two different varieties: Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, which is found more commonly in the northern regions, has longer needles and a more expansive canopy, allowing it to thrive in slightly drier regions; and Pinus elliottii var. densa, which is native to southern Florida and is adapted to the more humid climate with its shorter needles and denser growth form.

Slash Pine has lost popularity across most of the Southeast, but it remains popular in Florida. A wand for the sorrowful, unfortunate, and those who are often unlucky in love, many, when first presented with this wand, may try to flee from it. However, a Slash Pine wand never chooses someone who does not have at least one of these traits, and a wizard may be hard-pressed to find a wand that would match them as precisely. Individuals chosen by a Slash Pine wand may isolate themselves from others for a multitude of reasons, most usually in an attempt to protect themselves or others from harm (those chosen by these wands are often but not always unusually empathetic), due to being offended by someone, or due to a crush that they may perceive as unfortunate or awkward. Much like the tree's natural ability to thrive in swampy and challenging conditions, these individuals often demonstrate resilience by growing stronger amidst adversity. They are also often victimized by others, and while many bearers of such wands start quite naive, they are known to become exceptionally cynical with age, frequently, and can be as prickly as this plant's thorns when provoked.

Magically, the Slash Pine wand excels in spells of protection, providing a sturdy shield against adverse forces. It is particularly effective at casting wards that barricade against emotional and physical threats. Its magic is also known for enhancing spells that foster resilience and personal strength, making it a favored tool for those learning to fortify themselves against life's challenges. This wand has an inherent affinity for healing magic, often supporting spells that mend emotional wounds and encourage inner peace.
