The olive, known by the botanical name Olea europaea, meaning "European olive", is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae, found in the Mediterranean Basin from Portugal to the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and southern Asia as far east as China, as well as the Canary Islands and Réunion. The species is cultivated in many places and considered naturalized in all the countries on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Java, Norfolk Island, California, and Bermuda. Olea europaea is the type species for the genus Olea.
Olive is an ancient wand wood. One of the first woods used in wand making, olive is well-known for choosing wizards and witches who prize peace and have exceptional charisma to accomplish that task. The unique grain pattern makes this one of the most aesthetically pleasing wands available. There is a superstition that one should never go up against an olive owner in any sort of competition. However, they can lose– at least in surprise situations. When given the opportunity to prepare and practice, these people work to ensure their victory in whatever they pursue. They also often are wise beyond their years, and so can become venerated by their peers. These folks are not prone to give in to their anger, but these feelings can build up in their mind and psyche. This can cause the wand to suddenly backfire and injure its owner in the process.
