Acer negundo, known as Box Elder or Boxelder Maple, is not only a species of maple native to North America but also holds a special place in magical folklore. It is often referred to as the ash-leaved maple or maple ash in the United States. In Canada, it is commonly known as the Manitoba maple and occasionally as the elf maple, hinting at its mystical aura. In the British Isles, it is recognized as the box elder or ash leaf maple. This tree is believed to possess magical properties that resonate with those gifted in seeing beyond the ordinary, making it a sought-after element in the creation of powerful wands.

A member of the maple family, not to be confused with Elder, Box Elder can be incredibly loyal once they have selected their master, and will not yield easily to someone who tries to win them from those they chose. Only if they are passed on willingly will the wand work properly for its new bearer. However, despite this, Box Elder wands will never take more than seven masters and should always be buried with the last. Generally, those Box Elder wands select are those who see the bigger picture, who can think beyond the bounds of life and death, and who will do so to protect those they care for or consider under their protection. In terms of magical strengths, Box Elder wands are especially adept at casting protective spells, making them invaluable for defensive magic. Additionally, they excel in spells related to transformation, reflecting their connection to seeing beyond the ordinary, and can enhance enchantments intended for protection and safeguarding cherished values.
