The pistachio, a member of the cashew family, is a small tree originating from Central Asia and the Middle East that was introduced to California because the climate is ideal. However, pistachio trees can grow anywhere in a dry, hot climate. The tree produces seeds that are widely consumed as food.

Pistachio is an ancient wand wood - among the earliest, along with Date Palm and Olive - but still unusual. Pistachio wands are known to select those likely to live long lives but are otherwise notably diverse in those they will pick. Some wandmakers have postulated that, in particular, Pistachio likes survivors of trauma which is why it otherwise seems so diverse: people respond in a myriad of ways to trauma, and people survive it in many ways as well. Regardless, Pistachio is a very reliable wand, though it should never be made to cast when wet or in water. Even heavy rain can make Pistachio wands unreliable, hence their commonality in primarily arid areas.
