Juniperus virginiana, known as red cedar, Virginian juniper, eastern juniper, red juniper, pencil cedar, and aromatic cedar, is a species of juniper native to eastern North America from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains. Further west, it is replaced by the related Juniperus scopulorum, and to the southwest by Juniperus ashei. Red cedar is prized for its distinctive physical properties: the wood is moderately dense, with a fine, straight grain and a warm, reddish-brown hue. It exhibits moderate flexibility and is renowned for its workability, making it a favorite among wandmakers for crafting wands that balance strength and elegance. In magical lore, red cedar wands were famously wielded by the celebrated wizard, Alden Blackthorn, during the Great American Wizarding Tournament of 1848. It is said that Blackthorn's red cedar wand was instrumental in his unexpected victory, as it granted him unmatched agility and strength in casting complex spells, making him a legend among duelling enthusiasts.

Despite its name, Aromatic red cedar is actually a closer cousin to Juniper than it is to Cedar. However, it does share numerous qualities with Cedar, both in Muggle applications and in magic. Its strong scent stays with it even when made into a wand, and such wands are often found in the hands of notable duellists, though not to the same degree as Aspen wands. Interestingly, Popular along the Eastern Seaboard and in the South, Aromatic Red Cedar is a highly effective wand for Transfiguration and Conjuring but fair at Healing. Ideal owners of red cedar wands are those with a bold and adventurous spirit, known for their daring nature. These individuals often display a strong affinity for exploration and creativity in their magical styles. The red cedar wand suits those who have a pronounced confidence and a willingness to tackle challenges, making it a fine choice for ambitious wizards who wish to excel in dynamic and transformative magic.

Additionally, the most complementary wand cores for red cedar wands are phoenix feather, known for its versatility and power, and dragon heartstring, which enhances the wand's inherent strength and adaptability. In the South, eastern red cedar is commonly paired with American wand cores, such as Thunderbird tail feathers, Wampus cat hair, and Snallygaster feathers. These cores help maximize the magical synergy, making red cedar wands even more effective for their owners.
