Arbutus xalapensis, commonly known as the Texas madrone, naked Indian tree or Texas madroño, is a species of flowering plant in the heather family. It is native to Central America, the southwestern United States, and throughout Mexico. It is found in canyons and mountains, on rocky plains, and in oak woodlands, at altitudes of up to 3,000 m in the south of the range, but lower, down to 600 m in the north of the range.
A rather unusual wand wood native to the American Southwest, Mexico, and Central America, though one certainly well-used, Texas Madrone wands are excellent Transfiguration and Astronomy wands, similar to how the tree sheds its bark, wands of the wood can change something from one thing easily into another, provided the bearer has suitable skill. Madrone wands are usually found in the hands of people who change noticeably from year to year, in appearance, personality, and interests. Thus wands of Texas Madrone are seen as ones of change and transformation and are sometimes sought by wizards who feel stuck in a rut.
