Aigeiros is a section of three species in the genus Populus, the poplars. Like some other species in the genus Populus, they are commonly known as cottonwoods. The species are native to North America, Europe, and western Asia. In myth and folklore, the Cottonwood has often been associated with protection and adaptability. Ancient tribes revered these trees for their resilience, believing that they housed spirits of endurance and survival. Legends tell of Cottonwood groves being sanctuaries where travelers found solace, protected by the whispering leaves. In modern magical practices, the lore of protection and adaptability is infused into rituals involving Cottonwood wands and amulets. Practitioners often draw on the tree's symbolic endurance to fortify spells of protection and to enhance rituals aimed at overcoming obstacles. In the past, as many as six species were recognized, but recent trends have been to accept just three species, treating the others as subspecies of P. deltoides.
Often underestimated, Cottonwood wands are somewhat uncommon due to the general difficulty of carving such a fibrous wood; however, there are ways to treat timber with certain potions so it will remain intact enough to carve and split as needed. Cottonwood wands tend to find those who will survive in unexpected conditions and even, sometimes, thrive, making them standard wands for adventurers and those who like a touch of adventure to liven life up. Additionally, those chosen by Cottonwood wands will often seek to protect those they see as needing it, and it would be a mistake to judge a wix with a Cottonwood wand as simply playful and lively. These wands are especially potent for spells related to protection, such as Shield Charms, and transformation magic, making them valuable for both defense and versatility in magical practices.
