Junipers are coniferous trees and shrubs in the genus Juniperus of the cypress family Cupressaceae. Depending on the taxonomic viewpoint, between 50 and 67 species of junipers are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic, south to tropical Africa, from Ziarat, Pakistan, and east to eastern Tibet in the Old World, and in the mountains of Central America. The highest-known juniper forest occurs at an altitude of 16,000 ft in southeastern Tibet and the northern Himalayas, creating one of the highest tree lines on earth.

One of the oldest wand woods, juniper has a reputation for specializing in all that is lost or hidden as well as wish-making. It is an active wand brimming with energy and is generally jubilant. It is especially popular in Finland and other parts of Scandinavia, as well as throughout the United Kingdom. Athletically inclined, these people excel at Quidditch and other sports, as well as hunting. They are above average in physical strength and are often long-lived. Good at bending the rules or not getting caught, juniper owners like to push boundaries and find loopholes in rules and systems. They also like to be helpful and will offer assistance to those in need without question. They are also willing to help others break rules or laws, depending on the situation. There is a talent with magic to do with smoke, hiding, and cleansing. There is also talent with counter-curses and counter-charms as well as antidotes.

The wish-making talent depends on the core– for those people, it seems that most of their unlikely desires tend to come true. Best subjects include divination (there may be a talent for clairvoyance), care of magical creatures, defense against the dark arts, and charms. Trails of purple smoke are emitted during spellwork. It smells like juniper berries, a mixture of fruit and fresh-cut grass with a hint of spice. This scent can help relax irritated nerves. Soaking juniper wands in gin or whisky can amplify their power for short periods (a day or less). Juniper wands are at their strongest and most potent during the last week of October, especially the 31st. When wet, this wand will release a scent akin to feline urine. These witches and wizards often get along well with cypress wand owners.
