Bursera simaruba, commonly known as gumbo-limbo, copperwood, chaca, and turpentine tree, is a tree species in the family Burseraceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas from South Florida to Mexico and the Caribbean to Brazil, Jinotega in Nicaragua, and Venezuela. In folklore, it is said that the gumbo-limbo tree is inhabited by guardian spirits, and its bark is believed to be infused with protective magic. This legendary aura is why many cultures have historically used its wood in rituals to ward off negative energies. Bursera simaruba is prevalent in the Petenes mangrove ecoregion of the Yucatán, where it serves as a subdominant plant species in the mangrove.

Gumbo-Limbo is a very unusual wand wood, highly prized in Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, and South America. Owners of gumbo-limbo are bold folk, despite their often thin and tall stature. They tend to jump into situations headfirst and like to live without a particular destination or goal in mind. They seek a general feeling of accomplishment or enlightenment, no matter the place or subject. Despite this, they have a strong idea about what they want to feel and do. If something displeases them or makes them feel insecure, they may attack the cause of this discomfort/insecurity with great prejudice. When insecure, they can become overly sensitive and self-pitying. They are protective of their achievements and belongings. Not liking to share credit or responsibility, they tend to take over an entire project during group work. Eloquent speakers, these witches and wizards excel at using language rhetorically and learning new languages quickly. They can be a bit materialistic. It is important to them to have a pleasing appearance and to live in luxury. They believe that appearance can hint at a person's or place's nature, especially their self-worth and confidence.

One of the most distinct magical strengths of gumbo-limbo wands is their ability to enhance a user's intuitive and spontaneous spellcasting. These wands are particularly effective in conjuring and binding spells, including complex charms and hexes. The wand's nature allows it to adapt rapidly to the energy flow of its user, making it remarkable for spells that require quick thinking and adaptability. Additionally, gumbo-limbo wands are known for their proficiency in protective enchantments, offering robust defense against negative energies and curses. Their strong connection to the user can also amplify spells that are empathetic in nature, making them ideal for magic that requires a deep emotional bond or understanding.
