When I sat down in the back seats, I watched as Selena hung up her phone. She turned around to look at me.
"I just called emergency services. We should wait for Danny before we leave."
I nodded at her. "How come you decided to help anyway? I doubt this is in your contract."
She laughed slightly. "The same reason you ran to help those people in that car." She smiled at me.
"Fair enough." I leaned back into the seat. My head was throbbing. "Any chance you know first aid?"
"Not much, but enough to get by. There's a first aid kit in here somewhere..." She got out of the driver's seat, making her way around to the back of the car. She came around to my side and opened the door, first aid kit in her hands. She opened it, sorting through various things. She seemed to know what she was doing, so I let her do what she needed to do.
After she had finished, I had my head bandaged up. She had looked at my stomach and had no idea what to do, so she left it, making a mental note to visit the hospital when everything was okay. My hand was only slightly burnt, so she did nothing with it. By the time she had done, a couple of fire engines had arrived along with an ambulance. Danny was stood over by the upturned car still, talking to one of the medics. The medic, who was female, was so obviously being chatted up by Dan. I couldn't contain my laughter when she began walking away while he was in the middle of talking. Danny turned to look at me and saw that I was laughing. He scowled and began walking over.
"The police will be here soon. We have to stay and give a statement." He fixed gaze with Selena.
"There's no way we can get out of it?" She said. I watched her shift her weight onto her other leg.
"Not that I know of." Danny answered.
As much as I wanted to tease Dan for being ignored, I knew I shouldn't. Talking to him might give him the wrong message. I looked up at his face and saw that his cheek was turning darker right where I had slapped him. I hope it bruises.
Sirens sounded close by as a police car swerved around the corner, stopping close to the incident. I realised that the fire had been put out. I assumed there was someone else in the upturned car as the firemen were trying to pry another door open. After conversing with the other emergency service crew, the two police officers came over. Both were male.
"I'm Officer Riley. This is my partner, Officer Dakin." Officer Riley indicated the man stood next to him. "We are assuming you saw the incident. What happened?"
Technically, I saw none of it considering I was in the back of a van. Was I supposed to tell them this? Or was I supposed to lie?
"The car drove into the van." Danny answered.
                              "How did the fire start?"
Danny shrugged. I watched him carefully. Something wasn't right about the way he was stood. I turned to my other side. Selena looked nervous too. "How does any fire start?" Dan folded his arms across his chest.
Please don't tell me he's done something stupid...
"Because we found this lighter on the floor near the scene." He held it up. On it was the Irish flag. "Judging by your accent, you're Irish." Officer Riley raised his eyebrows. "Care to explain?"
My mouth fell open as I stared at Dan.
"I stole it from Daniel." Selena said. I turned to stare at her.
"You're coming with us." Officer Dakin moved around to fix handcuffs onto Selena's wrists. Officer Riley did the same to Danny.
"What about my car?" Selena was yelling.
"Hey. I did nothing." Danny was saying.
"That's not what your body language says." The two officers began to put Selena and Dan into the back of the police car. Officer Dakin walked over to me.
"I'm sorry about this." He said as he too placed handcuffs around my wrists.
"I didn't do anything." I felt like a whiny child. "I don't even know what happened."
"You and your friends set light to innocent people is what happened." Riley yelled. Dakin looked at me with a little more sympathy.
"Don't worry. I won't put them on too tight." I heard them click into place. He walked me over to the car, forcing me into the back next to Danny. As I was seated next to him, the door closed.
I turned to the other two. "What did you do?" My voice was higher than normal.
"We needed to smoke Dylan out." Selena said.
"I could have died!" I yelled.
                              "But you didn't." She said.
"Did you manage to get Dylan?"
                              "Unfortunately, no." Selena said reluctantly.
"So all this was for nothing?" I said, focusing on Danny.
"When you put it like that..." She muttered.
The two officers got into the front seats, starting the car.
"Brilliant." I said under my breath. "Just brilliant."
