"What?" i asked, looking at him in disbelief.

"Yeah it was like a pop, we didn't know if it was like a fucking gunshot or something-" he said.

"Language!" i said to him, my arms still crossed.

"Sorry. We thought it was a gunshot but it didn't sound like one..." he said as he held his head low.

"What are you not telling me?" i asked, taking a couple steps forward.

He shook his head before looking up at me, "i heard voices, like little voices and no one else believed me." he said, shaking hid head as he looked back down to the ground.

I could see tears in his eyes as he tried to hide them away from me, "i'm just crazy, i'm just crazy." he repeated.

"Hey" i said, making my way over to him.

I put one of my hands on his shoulder, "you're not crazy."

He shook his head and i put my hand on his cheek, moving his face to look at me. He looked at me with his baby blues and I could see the fear in his eyes.

"Come on, come sit down." I said to him as i grabbed his elbow, pulling him towards the bed.

I sat down, patting the seat next to me. We sat in silence for a moment before Robbie broke down in tears.

"Hey, hey..." i said, rubbing his back, trying to calm him down. "Come on, talk to me."

He shook his head and looked up at me with his head still low.

"No one believed me but I heard them. They're the same voice, mom." he said through tears.

"The same voices?" i asked, puzzled.

"The same voices in my dreams..." he stopped, taking a deep breath. "The same voices i've been hearing for years."

I sat there, not knowing what to say. I thought the nightmares had stopped years ago...

"You've still been having them?" i finally asked in a whisper.

"They never stopped, I just stopped coming to you about them." he said, wiping his face.

"Oh honey..." i said, sighing. "I'm so sorry."

We sat in silence for a while.

"I believe you." I finally said.

He looked up at me, "it wasn't a dream..." he said, shaking his head.

"No. I know it wasn't. I used to hear them too. When your father was here..." i said, taking a deep breath, feeling tears coming to my eyes. "What you heard wasn't a gun shot, it was a balloon."

He looked to the other side of the room, trying to process the information.

"I saw it, I followed it to the edge of the woods and it popped before i could reach it." I said, swallowing hard.

"What? I don't understand." he shook his head.

I took his hand in mine, "i don't either but I think he's trying to tell us something."

"Why?" he sighed, bringing his other hand up to his face, rubbing away his remaining tears.

"I don't know" i said, defeated, "but hey, if you ever have a nightmare again, don't be afraid to come get me. I know your older but i remember how traumatic they were for you, so don't feel ashamed if you need someone." i said, giving him a slight smile.

"Thanks, mom." he said, smiling back at me.

"There's more candy left if you want some." i said, moving a piece of hair away from his face.

He just nodded. I gave him a hug and held the back of his head with my head.

"My sweet boy..." I said before getting up and walking out of the room.
