Jane's PoV

Honestly I would be lying if I said it was ok being at work knowing Maura isn't here. It fucking sucks. She text me to tell me she was taking the day off to get on top of things at the bar and she also still wasn't feeling 100%, migraines always had a way of wiping her off her feet.

I guess all the extra work I did for Maura when I was a student really paid off because I found myself offering to cover her classes when I had a free period. I really should have thought about it a little more and checked the roll call before saying I would as I'm currently sat grading her work whilst trying to run her lab whilst non other than my youngest brother sits messing around. I still find it difficult to look at him. He still looks very much like my father.

"TOMMY! Enough I'm sick of hearing your voice!" I yell causing the students to fall silent

"Never heard of having fun sis lighten up!" He retorts giving his friend a fist bump.

"Get your stuff Tommy, you're outta here!" I sigh grabbing a detention slip signing it he snatches it from my hand

"You're suppose to be my sister. What the fuck happened to you!?" He growls

"I am your teacher right now and you will do well to learn to respect that. Now go to the principals office do not think about ditching Tommy!" I snap as he leaves the lab "The rest of you get on with your work!"

I haven't been more grateful to hear the bell sound for the end of the day in a long time. As soon as the last student has left the room I quickly finish Maura's grading before rushing my own of the day, dumping it in my office and grabbing my jacket

"Jay you off?" Sam shouts from his class

"Fuck yes!" I sigh walking past his room, pulling my phone out seeing I had a couple of messages from Maura

"Hey have you seen Ste today?" I ask

"Nope not today, I'll see you later!" Sam shouts up the corridor to me

Just so you know Lee is now in Spaulding xx Maura

You're awful quiet sweetie, I'm presuming you've got a lot of work to do.. anyway maybe see you later, I'll be at Tigers trying to sort everything out. Xx

As I start my bike sitting on it I send her a quick reply before heading home to get changed

Sorry babe.. long ass day... remind me when I cover lessons I need check to see who's in them! Leaving now, going to get changed, I'll be at the bar in about twenty Xx Jane

"What happened Janie?" Maura calls from behind the bar as I make my way in not realising just how deflated I feel

"Well I did back to back lessons running from one department to the other which was fine but I didn't think to check the rolls and well low and behold I was sat in the presence of non other than Tommy for last period." I sigh sitting on one of the bar stools leaning my head on my hand whilst my free hand fumbles around trying to find my smokes yet only finding my zippo. "Fuck" I complain realising that they are on the kitchen counter.

"What happened?" Maura asks walking down the bar coming back with an ashtray and a deck of smokes sitting on the stool next to me

"This is not me being happy about you smoking Jane, this is just me seeing you're clearly not in a great place right now and probably need this." She explains "wait last period, does that mean you've been teaching my classes as well as your own?"

"I know you don't agree and I am cutting down but yeah I do need it and I don't want to drink tonight so this will have to do... and yes I split myself between our departments today, all your gradings done too. Just Tommy being Tommy, ended up sending him out to Mark with a detention slip, he just got under my skin saying shit like he thought I was supposed to be his sister." I shake my head "anyway how's your day been? Get everything sorted out?" I ask wanting to think about anything other than my messed up family.
