June 17thThe knock at the door was enough to shake Rebecca from her thoughts.
She had been pacing the room since she checked in an hour before and she was very close to having a breakdown.
As she opened the door she saw Colby staring down at her clearly out of breath.
"Did you run up here?" She questioned
"You texted me 'Emergency!' Did you think I was gonna just casually stroll up here?" He asked and she pulled him into the room quickly before shutting the door and he watched her begin to pace back and forth again "what's wrong?" He asked "did you see a spider again?" He questioned and she stopped and glared at him
"No" she shook her head and he laughed
"So it's not a spider emergency, what is it?" He asked looking around the room for any signs that could tell him but he found none
"I don't know how to say this to you because I haven't even said it aloud to anybody and I don't know how you're gonna take it-" she was rambling, a nervous habit she had and he placed his hands on her shoulders
"Rebecca just tell me what's going on! You're freaking me out" he said and she closed her eyes
"I'm late" she saidColby's POV:
"I'm late" she said
Two words I had never heard a woman say to me before, I honestly never thought I'd ever hear those words in my life and I was perfectly fine with that.
I had plenty of friends tell me stories of when their girlfriends or wives would tell them they were late and it just started this miraculous, amazing adventure.
This was the furthest thing from amazing or miraculous. This was my best friend, we weren't together and we had a slip up that night weeks ago and it wasn't supposed to happen between us, ever.
Thanks to alcohol that changed the plans and was now flipping our world upside down.
I watched as she folded her arms across her chest, she had tears forming in her eyes and I wanted so badly to just pull her into my chest and tell her everything would be fine but I couldn't move. I was paralyzed.
I watched her walk to her bag and pull out a box, holding it up
"I bought these on the way here.. I was going to take it by myself but I didn't want to be alone and I thought you should be here" she said and I just nodded "Say something.. Colby just say something"
"Okay.." I nodded that's all I could form, one stupid word that meant nothing "go take it" I said and she nodded as she disappeared into the bathroom and I sat on the bed, more to keep myself from falling over than anything else.Rebecca's POV:
As I closed the door to the bathroom and read the instructions on the back of the box, all I could see was my entire world crashing down around me.
My life depended on these stupid plastic sticks.
As I walked out to the room and sat the tests down on the desks, I took one last look at them before sitting next to Colby who was frozen in his spot on the bed.
"How long do we have to wait?" He asked in barely a whisper
"Three minutes" I said quickly and he nodded
"So in three minutes, either our lives are going to be fine and we are going to laugh at this" he said and I nodded
"Or they're going to be over" I said and his head snapped over to look at me
"Don't say that" he shook his head "our lives wouldn't be over" he stared at me
"Yeah yours wouldn't" I admitted "but mine would, I mean think about it.. if I'm pregnant, your life doesn't change for like 7 months.. mine changes immediately, I stop drinking, I stop working.."
"You're not in this alone" he shook his head
"I don't even know what I'd want to do" I shruggedColby's POV:
What does she mean she doesn't know what she'd want to do? If she's pregnant we are having a baby.. no question about it.
"You wouldn't end it" I said and she just stared at me "you wouldn't.." I shook my head
"I don't know!" She stood up and folded her arms across her chest
"This isn't like we are teenagers Rebecca, we are grown, we're stable, we would be fine" I said and she shrugged againThe ringing came from my phone and I pressed stop and looked at her
"Do you want me to look?" I asked and she shook her head
"I need to be the one to do it" she said and she took a deep breathShe walked over and stared down at the three plastic sticks.
I waited anxiously for my answer and I got it when she turned around with tears falling from her eyes.
