Chapter 2: Surprise

Lily's POV:

"I didn't hear you come in last night".

"Yeah, the meal went on for longer than I expected it to. Hope you didn't stay up too late".

I took another gulp of my sweet coffee and shrugged unimpressed by the lack of apology.

"Anyway I've left you dinner in the fridge, you can eat it tonight by yourself. I'm going to stay with mum and dad for a couple of days".

My frown instantly turned into a huge smile as the plan I had formulated was coming together. It had been too long since I had seen my family and I wanted to surprise them. Plus Matthew was winding me up so I wanted to get away from him for a few days.

"Oh. You are? When did you plan this?".

Matthew crept up behind me and wrapped his arms around me. He placed his lips on my neck and started leaving a trail of kisses along my jawline.

"I planned it last night after the phone call with my dad". Matthew hummed against my skin before continuing to kiss me.

As he lent in closer I gripped the counter as Matthew continued his pleasant assault on my skin, but something felt, wrong. Something didn't feel right. There was a sweet smell in the air, one I didn't recognise before. It seemed to linger around him.

"What's that sm-"

"So when are you coming back from this little getaway?" he whispered against my neck.

"I'm leaving now and coming back on Monday morning". Pulling away from his strong grip on me, I rinsed the cup and washed it clean before laying it to rest on the dryer.

I could hear Matthew talking behind me, but I wasn't listening. Instead, my focus was out the kitchen window where I had looked last night.

The blacked out SUV was no longer there. It must have been a friend of the neighbours.

"Babe, did you hear me?".

"Nope" I muttered back still staring out the window.

"I said that the business meeting went well. Got another contract signed and sorted". I turned around to face Matthew expecting him to be gazing at me but was instead smiling down at his phone.

"Matthew, that's fantastic". I rushed over to him with my arms opened wide ready to embrace and congratulate my husband on his continued success. I watched as Matthew hurriedly switched his phone off and slipped it into his pocket before pulling me into his embrace.

"Thank you. It wasn't easy, but we got there in the end".

I rested my head on his shoulder listening to his words vibrate against my ear, but I was too focused on the small details. My body revelled in his touch, but my head screamed at me to question the small details.

"Anyway, I need to get ready and head to the office. It's all going to get crazy now". Matthew kissed me gently on the head before pulling away.

"Ok. Have a good day".

Walking past him, I picked up my small suitcase and wheeled it to the door.

"You too. Tell your mum and dad I say hi and send them my love".

I hummed in response as I saw him briefly pull his phone out before putting it back in his pocket.

Before I had a chance to exit the house, Matthew slipped away into the bedroom closing the door firmly behind him.
