Alpha Grey's POV
We were inching closer and closer to the Royal Packhouse with each line of defense we took down. I had counted the loss of twelve of our wolves and though I would honor their deaths later, right now I could only think of how glad I was that neither one of them had been Nova. And that in all the bodies that had dropped, only so few of them had been ours instead of theirs.
Just when I snatched a wolf by the tail and sent him into the side of the already shredded gate, an even larger one rammed full speed into my side. Attempting to send me airborne, I slid my hand in its mouth to their surprise and though he managed to clamp down one good time effectively breaking skin down to the bone, I caught the upper portion of their jaw before the next snap and yanked it open, breaking it.
The other one pushed off of the gate, a rod from it was impelled into its abdomen yet still found the strength to snap its jaws at me like a shark out of water. I wouldn't be able to catch ahold of their razor teeth without coming out missing a few fingers. Instead, I ran at the gate with the wolf tailing me, flipping from its bent form and coming down on top of it, breaking its back with a loud snap.
Standing, I ran towards sun-kissed hair and a vampire. When she met my eyes, I could physically feel her relax within our link.
Looking at her with a blood smeared face and bruised arms only angered me more. At one point, I'd thought to keep her from this part of a wolf's life. The part that required bloodshed, death in numbers, war, chaos. The part that required the big bad Alpha Krem. But I had been selfishly a fool to think that it could happen. Nova had been made to stand on the frontlines, built to protect and take back what was hers. She hadn't been meant to be displayed under a glass seal and locked away in a trophy room, no.
She was meant to be all that she is.
"We're almost inside." She touched my arm. "Gather as many as you can. I'm sure it won't get any easier once we're in."
Nodding, I kissed the side of her head and took off to gather Kale, Spear, Gio, and a few others that were still upright. "We're heading in." I said after rounding them up. "Nova's top priority. Agreed?"
They all nodded with no hesitation. "Agreed." And as they spoke it in unison, it was truly the first time I'd realized just how much the pack had come together since Nova's arrival. A pack that was teetering on the edge of broken ties and no trust. Yet here they stood, old and new allies, prepared to lay down their lives for her. For an Aureate Moon wolf. Not even my parents had garnered the full strength of the pack as Nova had done in such a short amount of time.
"Let's take 'em." And in a blur of movement, we were to Nova and shortly thereafter, kicking in the doors of the Royal Packhouse together.
"I can smell them." Nova immediately set out on a jog toward the scent of the girls. "They're not far-"
"And just where do you think you're going, you bastardly little wench?"
All of our heads swiveled to the old croon who was now being flanked by wolves on either side of her. Gio started after her but Nova stopped him with a firm hand and turned to the old woman.
"You, boy." She singled out Kalen, "I don't forget a face. I told them they were wrong to let you roam around here. I knew you were nothing but trouble, traitor." She chuckled as if she knew a secret not even the Goddess would know. "Where you are, boy, is never where you should be."
He stepped forward again. "Wanna say what the hell you really mean?"
"You think it was Minette?" Her eyes reflected wickedly. "Don't you?"
