I wasn't sure when Grand-Prime Moani managed mangle Laurent out of here, but when I dodged June's next shot, I noticed then that they had gone. Grey and Baptiste were going head to head again, and each time Baptiste thought he'd held Grey down long enough to get to me, he was gladly mistaken.
No matter how many times he came at me, Grey was quick to send him back, keeping his promise to me. And our wedding would be his-no, our reward for all the hell we'd been through. And if marrying me oddly made him happy, then I would give him that.
I was so sick of us being in danger, of all the hurting, the lies, betrayals, and secrets. I wanted it all to end and for that to happen, I needed to go to the beginning. To the source. My source,
Beta June lunged at Lynn, but I managed to side-step her and land an unsuspecting blow, sending her right into Audri. Catching her by the back of her head, she yelled. "Now, Lynn!"
But just as soon as Lynn went to pierce her now claw-like hand through the heart of my mother's Beta, she bit down on Audri's arm and slipped the hand she'd managed to get free out to grab her gun.
"NO!" I screamed, and I could see the others running to stop what we all inevitably knew would happen. I blinked and the sound of the gun kept me from ever wanting to open my eyes again. No! I was suppose to protect her. She is my wolf.
I slid under June on my knees and spun up and around her, grasping her head between my arms and twisting with a loud scream, hoping the sound of her neck meant I was successful in breaking it. My scream was accompanied by another.. my mother's. Instead of turning to Minette, I crawled over to Lynn who was hunched over on the ground.. along with a body. And then I realized..
"Oh, Goddess.. no.."
Though my mother wailed behind me, cursing the Goddess for taking away one of her very favorites and promising to make Aureate Moon pay, I could only hear Lynn's cries above all else. She placed her hands to her uncle's chest, covering his wound.
"Uncle Spear.." She could barely form his name. "No," She looked over his entire body as that became her mantra, over and over again. "No!" She screamed now. "Why did you.. you shouldn't have saved me.."
"You.." His voice was so gruff and strong, even as we all knew he lay dying. "..you have to.. promise me.."
"I know, Uncle.. But I.. I never thought I'd have to do it.. without you.." Her whole body shook as she went to lay her head against him.
"I love you.. you are my daughter.. and I will always be.. proud of you.. and of being an Aureate Moon.." He sighed, his last breath.
"May you be on your way to the Moon now." Grey whispered and in the quiet that fell over the room, he picked up one of the spear-like poles and threw it right into Baptiste's back, through his heart. It happened so fast, so precisely, it didn't seem real. It seemed too quick, too easy as we watched his body jerk as the rod impelled him.
He turned to face my mother as an odd ringing sounded off through the room. Everyone seemed to be moving in slow motion now and I knew it wasn't a trick of the mind, it wasn't adrenaline. It was me, it was the power in me roaring to life. It was the pain of my pack pouring out through me. Forcing out whatever it could through me and shaking the room in such a vibration, everything else seemed almost at a standstill compared to how everything else moved around me.
I walked over to him and I could see my eyes glowing all of one color now, that which was of the Moon Goddess. Before his eyes jaded over with the sign of the dark oblivion we know as death, Minette would not be the last thing he'd see. It would be me.
