Arthur takes it too far because he is having a bad day and Merlin suffers idea from -Line-28-
Third POV
Merlin had woken up late because Giaus had him delivering herbs to some ill people in Camelot. He had to rush to the kitchen and get Arthur's food in two and a half minutes. To say Merlin was stressing out would be an understatement.
Merlin finally got to the kitchen only to be hassled by the staff, he got out with one minute to get to the king's chambers. He was going to be late for sure.
Merlin made it to Arthur's chambers three minutes too late, he had to stop for a gaggle of serving girls to pass. Setting the food down on the table, Merlin goes to open the curtains.
"Rise and shine sire!" He tries to say with as much enthusiasm as he can muster. He just got word that his mother had died from a horrible cold. He only got word last night. To say he was snappy would be the truth. A moan came from the bed and Merlin sighed.
"Sire, you have to get out of bed! You have a council meeting today then you have a training session with your Knights! Let's goooo!" Merlin had so much sarcasm in in his voice Arthur could hear it even in his sleep deprived state.
Today was not a good day for Arthur toady either. It was the anniversary of Uther's death. No, it was not a good day for the king or the warlock. Not a good day at all.
"Sire, if you don't get out of bed, I'm going to drag you out of that bed." Merlin was not going to take this shit today. He waited two seconds before walking over to the bed and dragging Arthur out of it.
"You idiot! I was getting up! Stop touching me you idiot!" Merlin let go of Arthur and he promptly fell on his butt. He groaned and slowly got up. Mumbling something about having the most idiotic manservant ever. He stalked over to the table and grouchily sat down. He was eating his breakfast rather quickly and quite sloppily. Merlin didn't notice; as he was getting Arthur's clothes ready for the day.

The council meeting was over at last and Arthur was ready to train with his Knights.
"You lazy fool over there, come here and grab a shield on your way." Merlin was sitting on a bench and was in fact doing something- he was polishing Arthur's sword because they were using maces at the moment. That didn't matter to Arthur though, he was going to take his pent up anger out on someone that shouldn't be able to fight back.
Merlin had walked over to Arthur and got in a steady stance. He wasn't going to argue, he didn't care much today. Arthur had begun striking Merlin as soon as he was in a "ready" stance. After three hits, Merlin was on the ground barley able to stay up on his knees. He was still kneeling after 25 hits and after 50 he stopped counting.
The Knights were beginning to be worried for Merlin, especially Gwaine. That was his best friend after all. Once Merlin fell on his stomach, Gwaine and Percival intervened; further preventing Arthur to hit Merlin any more. As Gwaine held Arthur back, Percival tended to Merlin. He was barely conscious, and clutching the shield tightly.
Merlin POV
It's just like Ealdor here today. Now I have a shield at least. The villagers of my home are not accepting of a warlock. They would beat me until I passed out. Luckily, I have friends in Camelot that will protect me from any real harm. They got Arthur off of me before I passed out! Horary! Percival is looking at me- or he's trying to- he has concern in his eyes. What did I do to deserve such good friends?
"You OK Merlin? That was quite a fall you took there!" He offered me his hand and I took it and stood up. Gwaine was still restraining Arthur. He had rage in his eyes, not directed towards me, I know that much. He's just under a lot of pressure today due to it being the anniversary of his father's passing.
