It was the eve of Arthur's birthday. Both of the Pendragons were sulking in their chambers. Uther being upset about the passing of his wife and Arthur being upset about his mother passing.

Merlin knew better than to bother Arthur today, so he was wondering around the castle doing random chores that needed to be done.

He just finished delivering flowers to one of the servant's daughter for her birthday and now he was meandering around the halls.

One of the windows was open so he went to close it, there was a slight chill in the air. But, he noticed that there was someone sitting outside.

He walked up to the person just to notice that it was the king. It was too late to abort the mission now, so he made his presence known by clearing his throat.

The king didn't move for a second, but soon after, he waved his hand in a dismissive manner.

"Go away. I do not wish to be bothered today." His tone held no room for argument, but when did Merlin ever pay attention to that?

"I know what tomorrow is. I'm sorry about her passing. I know how you must feel." He said it without even thinking, he was deep in his mind, thinking about Freya.

"How could you possibly know what it feels like to lose the one person that made you whole? Leave me." He still hadn't looked at Merlin, his gaze was fixated on something that wasn't there.

Merlin sat down next to Uther. "It feels like half of you has been torn away. Never to be seen again. Like you'll never be whole again." He was about to continue before he was stopped by Uther.

"Like the one thing that kept you alive was taken away. The one person that understood you left." The king had moved his gaze to the servant next to him. "Like a kingdom without a king. Or a king without a queen."

Merlin added. "A book without a title. Incomplete. Never whole again. Lost."

The king was astonished that such a young person could feel the pain that he did. "How do you know? Who did you lose to make you feel this way?"

Merlin offered a small, sad smile. "Her name was Freya. She liked strawberries. We were going to run away. Live by a lake with a couple of cows among other things. What was Igraine like?"

Uther let a tear fall from his eye. "She was perfect. Blue eyes and blonde hair. The most caring person I've ever met. She liked peaches and pigs. Every year on the anniversary of our meeting, we would go to the pig farm and spend the whole day there...I see her in him, you know?"

Merlin just nodded, no words were needed.

Maybe they had more in common than they both thought. Maybe they weren't so different.
