Hope you like this chapter guys! I really like this idea and I hope I can do it justice. Happy reading!
"Father, I don't want to go!" Ten year old Arthur yelled at his father.
"Arthur, you will go no matter what, there is nothing that you can do. You know that this is what's best for the kingdom."
"But do we really have to raid the camp? I don't think that it's fair! The druids don't do anything to harm us."
Uther didn't reply, he just walked out of the room muttering how Arthur better be ready by nightfall.
-----
They had just found the camp, Uther told Arthur to start the raid, the boy was glad for the cover of the night, his father can't see his tears under the darkness of the moonless night.
The boy started stalking into the camp, watching his step, when he found a boy- maybe three years younger than him picking herbs in a clearing just outside the camp. He held his hand out for the rest of the troop, telling them to stay back.
He walked up to the boy, "Hey, is this your camp?"
The boy looked at him inquisitivly, "Yeah, why?"
"My father wants me to take this camp to the ground, you better get out, now."
His eyes widened in fear, "Why does your father want to do that? We don't do anything."
"You practice magic, that's enough for him. Get away now, I don't want to hurt anybody."
"Thank you for telling me, but I hope you know that I will be warning the camp, they're my family. I won't leave them behind."
"I completely understand, is there a way you can do it so that I don't get in trouble? My father would have me flogged."
"Of course, I can give a warning with my mind, I've known how to do it for my whole life. It won't get traced back to you." He closed his eyes and mouthed something before opening them again. They've been warned. My name is Merlin, what's yours?" He held his hand out to shake.
Arthur gratefully took it. "Arthur, nice to meet you. Sorry again about your camp."
-----
The raid was successful, the entire camp was taken, except for the boy that Arthur met that night. He got away and went to a nearby druid camp. They kept in touch over the years.
-----
Arthur had mangaged to get away from the castle, he was in the woods reading. Merlin saw him and snuck up on the young prince.
"Merlin!"
"Arthur!"
They shouted in harmony for thirty seconds then fell on the ground.
-----
There was another raid, Arthur had to lead it again. He was able to sneak off to tell Merlin the day before so the raid was unsucessful.
-----
Merlin had to travel to another kingdom to gather supplies for his camp. He visited Arthur on the way, stopping in Camelot just to say hi.
-----
They had been friends for ten years now. Merlin was traveling to Camelot to visit Arthur, as he did every winter.
They were so careful that they didn't get caught, if Uther had even the smallest suspicion, Merlin would be found out. They were in a clearing in the woods after dark, just talking. A patrol of knights came by and saw them. They were quick to report back to the king.
-----
In town square, the kingdom was gathering. The king announced that there would be something huge to celebrate that evening. As the king and prince stepped onto the balcony, some of the guards carried out a boy, a bag over his head. He was thrashing against the ropes that they tied tightly around his wrists, as the bag was removed, revealing Merlin, Arthur's only friend for ten years.
It took only three seconds for Arthur to realize who that was. Before he could say anything, Uther began his speech. "This boy-" He gestured to Merlin- "Has been found guilty of witchcraft. He is to be burnt at the pyre."
"Father, don't do this. He hasn't done anything to harm us. Please don't do this, father."
"Hush, boy. You don't know what you're talking about. He has had you mind controlled as long as you've known him. Stand back and don't do anything stupid." He gestured at the guards and they nodded at him.
They strapped him to the pole and put hay at his feet.
They lit the torch and as the kingdom began to riot, the fire was set on the hay.
Merlin began to shout and writhe as much as he could. The citizens were crying, they didn't think it fair for such a young boy to die like this. Some were shouting, some even trying to take action. They were shoved back by the knights, but that didn't stop their attempts.
"Father, please. Don't do this."
Uther didn't respond, he simply smiled at the shouts and cries of his people.

ALTERNATE ENDING
The cries of the city soon died down, the smoke cleared out of the town square.
As Arthur looked at the blackened pyre, he didn't see what he expected to.
He saw black clothes that were ready to fall apart at any given moment. He didn't see the burned corpse of his friend.
He saw the slightly charred skin of a very powerful man. Someone that could kill an entire army with a look. He saw the fire in his friend's eyes. Fire that could burn a stone castle down in moments. He saw the anger in his face, the anger that would scare the most seasoned knight into doing what he wanted. What he saw, it scared him.
