41. Orphanage

The program starts and as it begins, Jungkook gets a call. He looks at me and gestures that he would be outside to take his call.

I've never been to a kid's school programme before. The soul reason being I was an only child to a single reason without any other family. Jin's mother and my mother were really close friends.

When Jin's parents decided to move out of here, he stayed just for me. Jin and I were inseparable ever since I can remember. The age gap never affected us, he was always my best friend and a brother figure.

I was just a naive and shy kid, whose world revolved around her mother. Sure I had friends but no one could be compared to Jin. So when the bullying in high school about my mother being a single child started, I wasn't impacted a lot because everyone seemed like mere acquaintances. Jin being there with me was all that I needed.

Because one true friend is better than thousands of fake friends.

That's what mom used to say.

The bullying continued for quite a while. It didn't do anything other than having me distance myself even more from people. After I got out of school, life was getting back ok track before that one day.

That one day when my heart was ripped out of my chest. The day my whole world crashed down. Had Jin not been there, I don't know what I would have been doing right now. I wouldn't be here, I know that.

My world sure crashed down that day, but my second world pulled it together. I actually believe that Jin is a real life angel. The man had his own problems, yet he deals with mine first.

"Lyra?" I snap out of my thoughts when I hear his voice.

"Yeah?" I look to my side at him.

"Bad news..." he whispers with nibbling at his inner cheek and looking at the stage and back at me.

"What is it?" I whisper back while cupping his right cheek.

"Hyung and Noona can't come...they got called at the last moment..."

A part of my heart breaks for Haneul and her parents, this was supposed to be a special moment. I decide to maintain my composure however.

I give him a small smile and say,

"Then let's make this moment as special for her as we can okay?"

He nods and takes my hand in his for comfort. When the choir group comes in, we see Hanuel dolled up like an angel and bobbing her head to the beat in sync with the other kids.

As the karaoke track begins, the kinds start singing to the melody in harmony. We wave as Hanuel and she smiles at first but that fades away and her confused eyes are on display.

She was looking for her parents.

We didn't stop waving, clapping, cheering her up and taking photos. We continued as an attempt to distract her.

The show was over and we were now standing outside waiting for the kids to come out.

We see Hanuel looking around and decide to walk up to her. Jungkook picks her up instantly and pecks her cheek.

"You sounded like an angel champ!" He cooes.

She smiled and nodded before asking the question that we had been dreading.

"Mom? Dad?"

Jungkook fumbles trying to find an answer that would not hurt her but fails to find one.

"They couldn't come..." I softly tell her, Jungkook looks at me, taken aback by how swiftly I revealed the truth but I continue talking, "so we will punish them later okay? For now, let's go celebrate! What does Hanuel want to do?"

"Do you want to go and eat out?" Jungkook smiles.

She pouts and snuggles into Jungkook chest quietly.

I stroke her hair while Jungkook and I look at each other wondering what we could do, that's when I get an idea. A risky one but I was ready to take it.

"Would you like to go and meet your friends Hanuel?" I ask, she immediately looks up at me, her eyes sparkling, inspecting for a hint of lie.

"Ah, you want to visit them?" I grin.

She nods her head furiously and opens her arms to me, wanting me to pick her up.

"You're fine with it right?" I ask Jungkook while having Hanuel up in my arms.

"Yeah ofcourse- seeing her smile like that, who could have a problem?"

I nod while smiling and we start walking towards the car.

"You're pretty strong, I didn't think you would be able to carry Hanuel for so long..." Jungkook chuckles.

Is she that heavy? Shit.

"Uh...no, she isn't...that heavy?"

"Is she? I don't know, I thought you won't be able to-"

"I'm not that weak!" I pout.

"Really?" He teases.

"Yes!" I whine and place Hanuel into the car.

"I have to make a call, I'll be back!" I say before moving away from the car and going into some place where they wouldn't be on sight.

"Hello?"

"Jin, I need help."

"What's wrong?"

Explaining everything was a pain, I'll leave it at that.

"YOU WHAT?"

"Look I'm sorry but I couldn't see Hanuel's heart breaking like that."

There were a few minutes of silence before he spoke up again.

"I've contacted the lady and she is at the orphanage, I'll be on my way and make sure no one reveals that we have been going there for years now. Should I stay there after the work is done and join you or not?"

"Thankyou! You should join us, the kids and Hanuel would be happy to see Jinnie Uncle."

"Alright, I'm on it. AND THIS IS THE LAST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS BEING DONE, AM I CLEAR HAEWON?"

"Jeez...yeah okay okay...I'm sorry and thankyou!!"

Satisfied, I make my way back to the car and sit down next to Hanuel.

"Office call?" Jungkook asks.

I nod at him while he smiles at me through the mirror.

Its 1:20 am right now and I have to wake up at 6:30 am for school lol.
