Mapi's POV:

"Mapi turn on the TV!" Patri walked into the room. "Mariana news."

"She's coming home!" I turned to her.

"No."

"Then I don't care."

"Dude." Virginia sighed. "That's literally your wife."

"Dude. She literally left."

"You know what?"

"Oh please, Vir. Tell me what! Since that's all you do now!"

"Both of you stop it!" Jenni stood between us. 

"I don't have to sit here and listen to either of you. It's not your concern."

"I was Mariana's maid of honor. She's like my little sister now. It is 100% my concern Mapi. You are also one of my friends. Mariana has made you the happiest I've ever seen. I can't sit here and watch you let that go away." 

"You let her get on that plane and go to Portugal. You already watched her go away." 

"What's the Mariana news, baby face?" Leila asked Patri.

Patri turned the TV on. 

"Captain for club and country! Mariana has been announced at Santa Clara's captain for their debut season. The announcement was made yesterday during their press conference. In other news, Natalia Garcia DeLuca is unstoppable. The Italian forward is looking to continue her goal-scoring streak when Italy faces the Netherlands and Portugal. The striker who currently plays for," Patri muted the TV. 

"Great. She's the captain. Now she'll never come back." I scrolled through my phone.

"Why are you being such a,"

"Asshole?"

"Virginia." Alexia sighed.

"She was thinking it." Virginia pointed to Leila.

"Yeah, but I wanted to be nicer about it." Leila responded.

"Think what you want." I got up. "I don't care."

September 2026

"C.D. Santa Clara is off to a flying start in their first season. Mariana leading the way in scoring. Mariana is with the national team right now for their two friendly matches against Italy and Spain." I looked down. "Mariana is set to face off against her Barcelona teammates when she heads to Madrid with the national team. Her wife and Barcelona teammate, Mapi Leon who recently decided to come out of retirement. The defender said that while she felt it was time, she's missed playing for her country. Patri Guijarro was very excited at the announcement."

I headed off to the stadium and stood with my teammates on the field. The Portuguese players were there. "Mari!" Virginia smiled and ran over. 

"Hey!" I heard her. "Miss me?"

"Yes! But I heard you're killing it in Portugal?"

"It's been fun to be back in Portugal. But I do miss playing in Spain." I looked over and made eye contact.

"Go talk to her." Carmen whispered.

"You go talk to her."

"I'm not her wife!"

"You're not anyone's wife."

"Hey!" Lola walked over. "Shut your mouth. I'll slap you so hard that neck tattoo will move to your forehead." 

Mariana's POV:

"What's going on with that?" I nodded toward Mapi.

"You tell me. That's your wife."

"Hasn't seemed that way." I crossed my arms. "She still has not talked to me. She's still upset about the whole home thing." I sighed. "I was born in Portugal. It's my home. I'm sorry." 

"You don't have to apologize." She put her hand on my shoulder. "I get it. I've been on your side this whole time."

"Over Mapi?"

"I told you at your wedding. We are family now. Understand?" I nodded. "I love Mapi to death. But I love you too. And you've been through enough. The last thing you need is your dumbass wife getting annoyed over stupid shit." 

I laughed. "Thank you. I just wanna focus on the game today." I nodded. "That game against Italy was tough." 

"I saw. Natalia showed no mercy."

"I hate playing against that girl." I shook my head.

"Mariana!" Ana yelled. "Come on."

"I'll see you on the field." I smiled and waved to everyone else. Then I headed off with my team. 

"Did you talk to Mapi?" Ana asked.

"Did you talk to Mapi?" She shook her head. "There's your answer." 

No one's POV:

"Welcome to today's friendly match! Portugal has come to Madrid to take on Spain! They just lost to Italy 3-2, Natalia Garcia DeLuca with the hat trick and late winner. Portugal now looks to bounce back against a Spanish side that just drew with France. Spain will be without Sandra Paños who was injured against France. Lola Gallardo will start in goal. Spain also welcomes back defender, Mapi Leon who came out of retirement after a few injury issues at the back for Spain."

"We will have lineups and anthems next."

Mapi's POV:

I stood in the tunnel and looked over at Portugal's line. As usual, Mariana was the last one out. She walked by her teammates and stood in the front. I kept my eyes on her, unable to look away.

She turned and looked at me. 

I didn't look away. She smirked and turned back around as the refs led us out.

"Let's go!" She yelled.

We stood on the field as we listened to our anthems. Then they walked down the line to shake our hands. As we stood ready for kickoff, I felt myself grow more uneasy.

I come out for a few games while everyone heals up, and my first game is against my wife.

"Let's go!" Alexia yelled.

I nodded and heard the whistle.

Let's go.

Yes, I made Mapi come out of retirement for this game. I live for drama bitch.
