I woke up the next day not feeling any form of pain. I was very surprised. I stood up gingerly to check the glass used in making the small window in the attic. It was very blurry and I couldn't see well but I was able to notice that there was no form of bruise or cut on my face. I was shocked to my bone marrows.
I caught sight of another thing. There was a strand of golden hair peeking from the side of my head. For a split second, I thought I was imagining some crazy things but, I realized that it was actually real.
I heard my mother calling out my name and before I went to answer her, I made sure to tuck the strand of golden hair in between my brown locks. I got my brown hair and blue eyes from my father and I was the only one who looked like him, it was such a pity that he detested me with utmost passion. Noe and Nylah both had my mother's black hair and brown eyes. They were twins. Nylah had my father's quick temper while Noe had my mother's cool demeanor. The fact that my mother was gentle made it easier for my father to treat her like a dog.
I was seventeen but, I had never celebrated any birthday since I was born. I don't even think anyone remembered it. I broke out of my train of thoughts as I heard my Mother's voice; "Melina, I need you to iron this gown for me. We have a party at the palace this evening and I want to, look my best".
I collected the gown from her without even looking at her. The hatred I felt towards her was very strong, I had a powerful urge to scream at her and shake her to reality. There and then I just wanted to tell her that I was her child too and that she gave birth to me but, I just had to hold it in.
Later, I was done with her gown which was so sophisticated, it was hard to iron. I had to iron it perfectly anyway because, if I didn't, I would get a good thrashing. My mother was not the one that would do the thrashing, my father would. Truth be told, my Mother had never touched me but, the way she treated me like I was nothing was so terrible that, I had wished several times that she would just beat me. At least that would show that she was giving me attention.
I made sure to clean the palace to the best of my knowledge for the party that was supposed to take place in the night. Mind you, I had only leftovers from their breakfast this morning. It did very little to satisfy my hunger but I did not have a choice. I avoided my father and king Quan. I did not want them to see that my face had healed.
Before the party started, I was informed of my aunt's arrival. She is the only sister of my father and no she did hundred times more wickedness to me. She had this evil glint in her eyes anytime she looked at me. The only reason why they would inform me of her arrival is because I was to play servant girl.
I went outside and proceeded to carry her luggage. She laughed this watery disgusting laughter and said "Here comes the outcast. Oh, dear you look worse for the wear". I ignored her nasty remarks and just wheeled the three big boxes she brought into her permanent room in the palace. As I kept on struggling with the boxes, she kept on laughing and throwing shady remarks at me. Truth is, I didn't really care, I already zoned out.
