MELINA

chapter five

Eighteen years ago.
Olivia sat down in the library of her brother King Arthur with a displeased look on her face. She just found out about a prophecy that made her very angry. The things written on the piece of paper she held in her hands were:
"At a certain time, a girl will be born"
"Mother of all, last of the three"
"Destined to have powers stronger than any that the world has ever seen"
Olivia stood up and started pacing around. At that time, she was pregnant with a female child at the same time with her brother's wife, the queen. Olivia was a very smart person and she figured out the girl in the prophecy
"Mother of all, last of the three". Her brother already had two children and was about to give birth to the third. They already figured out that it was going to be a girl. She knew that the girl in the prophecy would be her brother's last child. A surge of jealousy burned through her as she wanted it to be her own daughter.
She knew her daughter couldn't have the powers because they could not be transferred but she took it upon herself right there to find a way to eliminate the baby growing in the womb of the queen. She took the piece of paper and tore it into two unequal halves. She took one with her, rolled the other one and threw it on the floor in anger. she went out of the library after that.
Olivia sat in her room fuming with anger. All her plans to terminate the baby proved abortive. She tried having a drink with the queen. She already planned earlier that she would poison the queen's drink. The poison was not supposed to kill the queen it would just make sure that, the baby would not be born alive.
It was as if the gods were watching her because as the queen was about to put the wine cup to her lips, the cup slipped from her hands and shattered on the floor. Olivia watched in horror because it was hard getting that poison and she knew that it was not going to be easy to get it again.
She knew her brother loved his wife so much and she couldn't afford to kill her so she devised another plan. Olivia gave birth to her own daughter a week before the queen. She named her Ashley. Olivia had a husband but she was widowed few weeks after she became pregnant with Ashley because he engaged in a battle of powers which claimed his life.
As soon as she heard that the queen had given birth, she went to see her and the baby. Nobody suspected that she wanted to do anything terrible because she was family.
She kept on checking on the baby in the cot and she was also talking about how beautiful she was. She asked for the baby's name from the queen. "Her name is Melina", the queen said. Olivia at that moment was thinking about how her name even carried power but she smiled and told the queen that it was such a beautiful name.
She stayed there for three hours, hoping that the queen would fall asleep soon so that she would put her actions in place. As luck would have it, the queen fell asleep and Olivia had the baby all to herself. She brought out the poison which she purchased from an old man.
The man already assured her that whoever took the poison would die instantly. She brought out the small black bottle which contained the poison and smiled evilly. She opened it and went to the baby. She tipped the bottle and poured the red liquid into Melina's mouth, the poor innocent baby who did not know that someone was trying to do her evil.
Olivia went out of the palace after the deed was done with a look of satisfaction on her face and went back to her house. She was waiting for news. She was waiting for her brother to call her and tell her that Melina was dead. But she did not hear any news. One week, two weeks, three weeks and finally four weeks passed but she didn't hear any news. When her brother finally called her, she found out that the child was not dead but there was also bad news. The child did not have any powers.
Olivia smiled.
