chapter seven

I went to bed in the early hours of the morning. Oh, did I say bed? I meant cold hard merciless floor that made my back ache. The thing was, that was the first time I went to sleep with joy in my heart. I also had a feeling that something very big would happen very soon. I woke up later to the sound of someone tapping on the door of the attic. I crept slowly towards the door and put my ear to it. "Melina, open up, it's me, Noe". I heaved a sigh of relief because I thought some serial killer was about to murder me.
I opened the door and faced my brother. "Hi baby girl, I brought you breakfast. I want you to at least eat something good today", he said as he unloaded the bag he was carrying. It all felt surreal to me but, I was glad that someone finally had my back. I licked my lips in anticipation as I saw the freshly baked bread with ham and cheese. He also added some grapes and berries. I thanked him profusely before he left. Afterwards, I helped myself to the food, trust me, it was so delicious, I kept on sighing as I ate it. At that moment, it felt like I was in heaven.
When I was done eating, I had enough strength to carry out my strenuous day's work. Another funny thing happened as I was plucking out the weeds in the garden. I saw a dead plant and I was about to pluck it out when it sprung to life as my hand touched it. I started getting afraid because of all the weird things that had been happening lately. It was there and then that I knew that I had powers and they were beginning to manifest. I made up my mind that I was going to tell Noe when I meet him later at night.
I skipped through all my work in excitement and I also got a lot of insults from my father. He called me clumsy and a whole lot of other names. I didn't mind, I just wanted the day to go very fast.
I met Noe later at midnight and I told him about the time when my cut healed and about today when the plant came back to life. He was speechless and happy at the same time. "Melina, you know what? I will go to the library tomorrow and get some books to figure things out. It looks as if you have earth power, but I really do not know anything about healing powers, it has never been heard of".
I looked at myself from head to toe and smiled. So, I had powers. This thing that already turned me into an outcast was actually just hiding. Noe continued "Mel, for the meantime please do not tell anyone about this until you have figured out how to tame and use it". I nodded my head in agreement and kind of blushed at the nickname he called me.
He hugged me goodnight and went back to his room while I also went back to the attic. I was so restless I couldn't sleep and I just kept on thinking about the events that took place that day. There was just one thing that kept flashing through my eyes before I drifted off to sleep
It was that little piece of paper I picked up on the floor in the library.
