c.h: Freshly Brewed

"So, what are we doing this weekend?" I asked Trinity at her locker nearly a week after her pool party. She pursed she lips and shrugged a little. "Well we're always.." I stepped closer to her. "Doing magic or hanging out with your friends doing magic so why don't we go somewhere else like a coffee shop maybe? A bookstore."

"I don't know Calum. I really should practice my magic." She replied softly. It was weird. She had been like this all week, distant. Sometimes my presence startled her, like she didn't remember I was still standing next to her. Her eyes held a question I didn't know the answer to.

"Okay, we don't have to hang out then." If she got powerful just by having me around, I should probably distance myself from her as well. Trinity said nothing and when I started to walk away, she grabbed my wrist. When I felt that electric pull, I turned around immediately. She let go of me quickly, like she didn't want to touch me in the first place.

"Actually, coffee sounds nice."

----

Absentmindedly, Trinity was stirring creamer into her coffee cup in a circular motion as she watched the rain hit the window from outside. I sipped my mocha slowly, watching the movement of her hand. It was slow, deliberate. I blew on my own cup, the steam wafting towards her. Sighing, I took a small sip. We hadn't really spoken much. Trinity seemed out of it when I picked her up, more interested in the rain than making conversation.

Andy and I still couldn't figure out how she was getting stronger. I wasn't love sick, I definitely wasn't dying but her power only increased. What was the cause? Where was she getting her energy from? I looked back down at her steaming cup. She could probably make images from the steam, just like she could form little dancing fire girls or turn water into moving pictures in the air. I don't think I will ever be able to understand how magic works.

As I continued to stare at her cup, the steam began to move in an intricate and specific pattern. I tilted my head staring at it. The steam wasn't alive so how was it moving like that? Trinity must have been doing something to it. When I glanced up at her, she didn't even seem to be concentrating though. Slowly, a picture began to form in her cup.

"Trinity, look." I said softly, staring at the the little images in the steam. It was a forest, complete with a giant round moon towards the top and some birds flapping their wings and flying around and through the steam. Trinity looked down and startled, dropped her spoon which, in turn, splashed her coffee and made the images go away.

"Oh." She said, confused by what she just happened.

"You alright? You seemed surprised." I asked her.

"I was. I wasn't trying to do anything." Trinity explained, staring at the coffee cup like the images might come back. I offered her a small smile.

"That means you're getting stronger. It's what you wanted right?" Trinity purses her lips and squirms in her seat a little. Why do I feel awkward all of a sudden?

"I guess."

"You guess?" She shrugged. What had changed? What was different? I reached out and took her hand. I wasn't sure if I did it so I could feel that weird surge of energy between us or if I was just trying to comfort her. "What changed? Two weeks ago, it was all you talked about." She looked from my hand over hers, back up to me but didn't move it.

"I don't know. Nothing really changed but.. It's hard to explain and my friends are giving me a hard time because I don't want to do something but I'm the leader of the group and if I don't follow through, they're not going to listen to a damn word I say."
