n.h: Music to my Ears
I didn't really know why I was out this late at night. All I knew was that a beautiful girl was singing and I just had to find out who they were and where they were. To say I was enchanted would be an understatement. I was spellbound, captivated, hypnotized, mesmerized, transfixed, nearly every adjective one might use to describe someone who is completely infatuated with someone else. Even though I didn't know who they were, I knew she was going to be the most beautiful girl I've ever laid my eyes on. I just needed to match the voice to a face now. A voice as lovely as hers had to have a face only Angels could dream of carving.
Okay, so maybe I was a little nuts. I mean I heard the singing from my bedroom window in the dead of night. Most people might be scared, even a little confused. Who was singing and why? I just wanted to know the who part. So I climbed out of bed, pulled on some jeans, a jacket, my shoes and headed out the front door. The singing was leading me to Lake Erie here in my hometown. Despite the name, people love coming here. It's a popular place during the summer. This was where the singing was coming from.
I didn't know what it was about the music that had me so entranced. I just loved it and I wanted to hear more. No I needed to hear more. I needed to meet this girl and.. And I don't know what. I just had to meet her, be with her, I had to do anything to get to her. Nothing was going to stop me.
As I approached the waters edge I finally saw the girl. Her back was to me and she was standing in waist deep water. Her dark hair seemed to be laced with blue ribbons and flowers. Her dress was ghostly white and there was this sort of blue, green glow around her.
When she turned her eyes were blue, a deep blue. The girl seemed startled though, like she hadn't expected me. I opened my mouth to ask her her name. Instead, she stopped singing and dove head first into the water. For the first time that night, I questioned my sanity.
Shaking my head and touching my fingertips to my temple I stared at the ground confused. Outside. I was outside. I knew that but I was fuzzy on some details. Why had I come out here? There was a girl. She was singing. A girl... Looking back out across the lake I scanned the clear, smooth water. It wasn't even rippling anymore. I hadn't seen where the girl went or if she had come up yet. Walking to the water, I scanned the shoreline. There wasn't a sign of her. Why was she out here? It was dark and cold. Being in the lake must be worse. I shivered. What if she was drowning?
"Hey! Hey girl!" I called out running a hand through my hair. She must be drowning. Should I go in after her? No, there was something strange about all this. I mean, a girl singing in a lake, in the dead of night? That was sort of unusual. But she really was.. Beautiful.. That's when I remembered, again, that I was outside. I was outside, it was freezing and I was wearing sandals. What the fuck?
Walking back home I felt like I was going to freeze to death. I couldn't believe I had been stupid enough to follow the sound of someone singing to Lake Erie in the dead of night. Running a hand through my hair, I turned down my street. My house loomed in sight and sighed. My eyelids were heavy and all I really wanted to do was get under the covers of my bed and go back to sleep.
Thankfully, I had enough sense to not lock the door behind me when I left the house. I was probably just too entranced to lock it anyways. Climbing the stairs, I entered my bedroom and pulled off my shoes, peeling off my jacket as I went along. I told myself to remember the experience so I could talk to my friends about it later. I fell asleep thinking about her.
----
I could tell my parents wanted to talk to me. My mom kept giving me funny looks and my dad frowned a little when I caught his eye. I wasn't about to be the first person to bring it up though. I just left it alone. When I was spooning the last bit of my cereal into my mouth my mom finally said something. "Sleep well last night?"
"Yeah pretty good." I replied nonchalantly.
"Son, we heard you get up in the middle of the night. You left the house. You were gone for twenty minutes." I sighed. My dad was always straight forward.
"Yeah I.."
"What the hell were you doing? It was nearly two o'clock in the morning."
"Well if you'll let me explain." I said slowly. He sighed and shook his head but stayed quiet. "It's going to sound crazy but I heard something."
"Heard what sweetheart?" My mom asked, her voice full of concern. I sighed again.
"It was a girl. She was singing and.." My moms face changed from concern to puzzlement and my dad only seemed to get angrier. "I just wanted to know why she was singing."
"So you got out of bed to stalk some girl?" My dad demanded.
"I think it's romantic. Who was she? Does she live around here?" I pursed my lips. They were going to think I was crazy.
"She was at Lake Erie." They stared at me confused.
"Honey, that's at least three blocks away from our house." My mom said slowly. I nodded, glancing over at my dad. He looked less angry and more confused now as well.
"I know." I said slowly.
"Well how did you hear her singing then?" My dad demanded.
"I don't know." My mom was tapping her chin, thinking deeply.
"Maybe her voice just carried through the trees." My mom began, waving her finger around. She reads a lot of mystery books and gets really into a lot of the unsolved police cases. She prides herself in being some sort of detective. I don't blame her, being a stay at home mom isn't the most exciting thing in the world.
"Lori does that really sound like a possibility?" My father demanded and of course my mother had a soundproof explanation as to how I might have been able to hear the girl from nearly three blocks away. By the end of it, I was convinced that the sound of it reverberated through the trees. My dad 'hmphed' and I finished my cereal and washed my bowl. Before they could start up the conversation again, I went back upstairs to get ready for school.
