"Hush little baby don't say a word, mumma's gonna by you a mocking bird. And if that mocking bird won't sing, mumma's gonna buy...you.. a Dimond....ring.......goodnight Liddy. Mummy loves you so much." The women softly lays the baby girl in her crib after singing her to sleep.
The women walks out of the room and down the stairs. She sits down in front of the tv, picks up the photo album beside her and starts looking through the photo's again. She doesn't know why but she feels this feeling in the pit of her stomach, like something was going to happen. She's been feeling it for weeks. The doctors are saying it's just postpartum depression, but she's pretty sure it's not. She's happy. She loves her little girl. The only thing in her life that isn't perfect is not having her babies daddy around.
She turns the page to see photo after photo of her with her baby daddy. She wouldn't call him her ex because there were never fully together. They would spend time together when ever he was in town, he would send her things all the time, he use to call all the time. That was until she changed her number. She knows it was stupid but when she found out she was pregnant, she freaked out. She was pretty confident he wouldn't want to have a kid with her.
She stopped on one of the last photo's they had taken together. She didn't know but in this photo she was already pregnant. She smiles to herself and pulls the photo out, running her fingers over his face. She didn't want to admit it, but she really missed him. She turned the photo over to look at the numbers on the back. She thought about calling many times but always chickened out.
She thinks it over, the bad feeling in her stomach getting worse. She doesn't know if it's the scared feeling or what but she does it. She dials his number.
The phone rings....and rings....and rings. She's about to hang up thinking he won't answer when to her surprise she hears a familiar voice answer. "Hello?" The deep voice says sounding like she just woke him up from sleeping. "John..." she says softly. There's a long pause. "....Alice?" He ask's worriedly, not fully believing it's her. "Yeah, it's me. It's been awhile huh?" She still can't believe she did it. She actually called him. "Yeah... yeah it has. You changed your number..and moved......Why now?" He questions suspiciously.
She takes a deep breath "a lot happened...it was all a pretty big change. I wasn't sure what was the right choice. I've gone to call many times but always chickened out..pretty silly. I know......things have been weird lately. I guess making me a bit spooked is what made me finally call. Sorry I know that's selfish" he cuts her off "weird how? Are you ok?". She thinks over his question. "Yeah.. I think so...just a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. I've been feeling it off an on for a while. Just seems a little worse tonight. It's not...I'm just being silly. I probably should have thought this through mo......" she stops speaking. Static comes over the phone. "Alice? You still there?". "Yeah just the tv got all staticky and the lights flickered. I swear my new place has horrible wiring." The static continues to get worse until he hears Alice mumble "what the hell?" "What is it? What's going on?" He sits up and starts getting dressed. He throws a pillow at his son sleeping in the bed beside waking him up. His son see's him getting ready and soon follows.
"Oh I heard a noise upstairs. I just need to make sure my baby is ok" she get's up and starts walking up stairs. "Baby? What baby? Alice answer me!" He hears silence.... then a scream "JJOOHHNN!!!" The phone cuts out. He slams the phone shut and jumps up grabbing all there belongings, racing out to the car.
John and his son dean rush into the car. John slams down the accelerator, screeching down the road. He pulls his phone back out and dials a number. "Dad?" Dean says from beside him. John ignores him till the person answers "Jim. Hey I know it's late but I need your help. I need you to find someone for me. Alice Parker, she use to live in Lawrence up until about a year ago....thanks" he hangs up and keeps driving.
